Cast on 64 stitches. Divide evenly onto 3 double-pointed needles and join in the round.
Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 1 inch.
Knit in stockinette stitch until piece measures 5 inches from cast-on edge.
Heel Flap:
Row 1: (RS) *Sl1, K1; repeat from * to end.
Row 2: (WS) Sl1, P to end.
Repeat these 2 rows for a total of 20 rows.
Turn Heel:
Row 1: (RS) K18, SSK, K1, turn.
Row 2: (WS) Sl1, P5, P2tog, P1, turn.
Continue in this manner, working one less stitch before the decrease until all heel stitches have been worked. 20 stitches remain.
Gusset:
Pick up and knit 16 stitches along the side of the heel flap. Knit across the instep stitches. Pick up and knit 16 stitches along the other side of the heel flap. Knit half of the heel stitches. Place marker for new beginning of round.
