Cable Knit Cardigan Pattern

Create your own cozy cable knit cardigan with this detailed pattern.

Materials

Yarn: Aran weight yarn (US), Worsted weight yarn (UK), 8 ply (G) (imperial), 4.5mm (metric)
Needles: US 7 (4.5mm) straight knitting needles, cable needle
Stitch markers, tapestry needle, scissors

18 stitches x 24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch

Pattern is written for size M. Adjustments for other sizes are noted in parentheses.

Back Panel
1. Cast on 100 (110, 120) stitches.
2. Work in 2x2 ribbing (K2, P2) for 2 inches.
3. Begin cable pattern: Row 1: K6, P4, K8, P4, K18, P4, K8, P4, K6. Row 2 and all even rows: Purl across. Row 3: K6, P4, C8B, P4, K18, P4, C8B, P4, K6. Repeat these 4 rows until work measures 16 (18, 20) inches from cast on edge.
4. Next, shape armholes: Bind off 6 (6, 8) stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Decrease 1 stitch at each end every other row 3 times. Continue until work measures 20 (22, 24) inches.
5. Cast off.
Front Panels (make 2)
1. Follow Back Panel instructions until armhole shaping. Continue in cable pattern without shaping until work measures same as back to shoulder.
2. Shape neck: Work 40 (44, 48) stitches. Join a new ball of yarn and bind off center 20 (22, 24) stitches. Work each side separately, decreasing at neck edge every other row 3 times.
3. Work even until work measures same as back to shoulder.
4. Cast off.
Sleeves (make 2)
1. Cast on 40 (42, 44) stitches.
2. Work in 2x2 ribbing for 2 inches.
3. Begin cable pattern as for Back Panel. Work even until sleeve measures 18 inches from cast on edge.
4. Shape sleeve cap: Bind off 6 (6, 8) stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Decrease 1 stitch at each end every other row 10 (12, 10) times. Bind off remaining 10 (10, 12) stitches.
Finishing
1. Sew shoulder seams.
2. Sew side and sleeve seams.
3. Set in sleeves.
4. Weave in all ends and block garment to measurements.
