Sizes and Finished Measurements
Sizes: NB (0–6m), Toddler (6–24m), Child (4–10y), Adult S/M, Adult L/XL
- Finished brim circumference (relaxed/unstretched): approx 12, 14, 16, 19.5, 21.25 in (30.5, 35.5, 40.5, 49.5, 54 cm); stretches comfortably +3–4 in (+7.5–10 cm)
- Suggested total height (no fold): 6.25, 7, 7.75, 8.5, 9 in (16, 18, 19.5, 21.5, 23 cm). For a fold-up brim, add 1.5–3 in (4–8 cm). For slouch, add 2–3 in (5–7.5 cm).
Yarn
Worsted/Aran weight yarn recommended.
- NB: 90–110 yd (82–100 m)
- Toddler: 110–140 yd (100–128 m)

Typical skeins: 100 g ≈ 200–220 yd (183–201 m). One skein often covers up to Adult S/M; L/XL may require a second if you add a deep fold or pom.
Tools
- Knit needles (circular/DPN): US 7 (4.5 mm, UK 7) for brim; US 8 (5.0 mm, UK 6) for body. Circular 16 in (40 cm) plus DPNs, or a 32–40 in (80–100 cm) circular for magic loop. Optional for looser fabric: US 9 (5.5 mm, UK 5).
- Crochet hooks: US H-8 (5.0 mm) main; optional US G-6 (4.0 mm) for firmer brim.
- Notions: Stitch markers, tapestry needle, scissors, measuring tape, pom maker (optional).
Gauge
- Knit (after light blocking): 18 sts × 26 rows = 4 in (10 cm) in stockinette on US 8 (5.0 mm, UK 6). 1x1 rib relaxed ≈ 22–24 sts = 4 in (10 cm).
- Crochet (in hdc): 14 sts × 10 rows = 4 in (10 cm) with US H-8 (5.0 mm).

Knit Beanie Pattern (Bottom-Up)
Notes: Work brim on smaller needle (US 7/4.5 mm/UK 7), body on larger (US 8/5.0 mm/UK 6). Use a stretchy cast-on; long-tail or tubular recommended. All sizes cast on multiples of 8 for smooth crown shaping.
Cast On
- CO stitches: NB 64, Toddler 72, Child 80, Adult S/M 88, Adult L/XL 96.
- Join in the round carefully, pm for BOR.
Brim
- Work 1x1 Rib: (k1, p1) around.
- Brim depth: 1.5 in (4 cm) for classic; 2.5–3 in (6.5–8 cm) for fold-up.
Body
- Switch to US 8 (5.0 mm, UK 6). Knit all rounds (stockinette) until piece measures to pre-crown length from CO edge: NB 4.75 in (12 cm), Toddler 5.5 in (14 cm), Child 6.25 in (16 cm), Adult S/M 7 in (18 cm), Adult L/XL 7.25 in (18.5 cm). Adjust for desired slouch or brim depth.
Crown Shaping
Work as written for your starting stitch count. Use DPNs or magic loop when needed.
- NB 64 sts: Rnd 1 (dec): (k6, k2tog) rep around = 56. Rnd 2: k. Rnd 3: (k5, k2tog) = 48. Rnd 4: k. Rnd 5: (k4, k2tog) = 40. Rnd 6: k. Rnd 7: (k3, k2tog) = 32. Rnd 8: k. Rnd 9: (k2, k2tog) = 24. Rnd 10: k. Rnd 11: (k1, k2tog) = 16. Rnd 12: k. Rnd 13: (k2tog) = 8.
- Toddler 72 sts: Rnd 1: (k7, k2tog) = 64, then work NB crown from 64 sts (start at NB Rnd 1).
- Child 80 sts: Rnd 1: (k8, k2tog) = 72, then follow Toddler from 72 sts.
- Adult S/M 88 sts: Rnd 1: (k9, k2tog) = 80, then follow Child from 80 sts.
- Adult L/XL 96 sts: Rnd 1: (k10, k2tog) = 88, then follow Adult S/M from 88 sts.
Finishing: Cut yarn leaving 8–10 in (20–25 cm). Thread tail through remaining 8 sts twice, cinch firmly, secure on WS. Weave in ends. Lightly block to measurements; avoid over-stretching rib.
Optional Texture Variant
Broken Rib Body: After brim, work (Rnd A: k all; Rnd B: k1, p1 rib) and repeat A/B until pre-crown length, then crown as above.
Crochet Beanie Pattern (Top-Down, HDC)
Notes: Work crown flat in hdc increases, then even rounds for body. Add BLO sc brim for stretch. Hook: US H-8 (5.0 mm). Adjust hook to meet gauge.
Crown Increases
- R1: MR, ch1 (does not count), 8 hdc in ring, sl st to join (8).
- R2: ch1, 2 hdc in each st around, join (16).
- R3: ch1, (hdc, inc) around, join (24).
- R4: ch1, (2 hdc, inc) around, join (32).
- R5: ch1, (3 hdc, inc) around, join (40).
- R6: ch1, (4 hdc, inc) around, join (48) NB stops increases here.
- R7: ch1, (5 hdc, inc) around, join (56) Toddler stops increases here.
- R8: ch1, (6 hdc, inc) around, join (64) Child stops increases here.
- R9: ch1, (7 hdc, inc) around, join (72) Adult S/M stops increases here.
- R10: ch1, (8 hdc, inc) around, join (80) Adult L/XL stops increases here.
Body (All Sizes)
Work even in hdc, joining each round, until total height before brim equals: NB 5 in (12.5 cm), Toddler 5.75 in (14.5 cm), Child 6.5 in (16.5 cm), Adult S/M 7.25 in (18.5 cm), Adult L/XL 7.75 in (19.5 cm). For slouch, add 1–2 in (2.5–5 cm).
Stretch Brim (All Sizes)
- Switch to US G-6 (4.0 mm) if you want a snug brim; otherwise stay on H-8.
- Rib Setup: ch1, sc BLO in each st around, join.
- Repeat the BLO sc round for 6–12 rounds for 1–2 in (2.5–5 cm) brim. For a fold-up brim, work 14–22 rounds (3.5–5.5 cm).
- Fasten off, weave in ends.
Fit Tweaks
- If knit beanie is tight/loose, add/subtract 8 sts from CO.
- If crochet beanie is tight/loose, add/subtract one increase round (±8 sts) or adjust hook size.
- Row/round gauge off? Adjust the body length before crown/brim.
Care
Hand wash cool, lay flat to dry. For superwash, machine gentle inside a mesh bag. Shape crown while damp.
