Knitting Pattern: Dog Hat
Level: Intermediate
Size: Small (Medium, Large)
Materials:
- Yarn: Worsted weight yarn (UK: Aran, Metric: 10 ply) in main color and contrasting color
- Needles: US 8 (UK 6, Metric 5mm) straight needles and double-pointed needles
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
Gauge: 20 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette stitch
Instructions:
With main color, cast on 60 (70, 80) stitches on straight needles. Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 1 inch.
Switch to contrasting color. Work in stockinette stitch for 4 (5, 6) inches.
Shape crown:
- Row 1: *K8, K2tog; repeat from * to end of row
- Row 2 and all even rows: Purl all stitches
- Row 3: *K7, K2tog; repeat from * to end of row
- Continue in this manner, decreasing 8 stitches every knit row until 8 stitches remain.
- Break yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining stitches and pull tight to close the crown.
Ear flaps:
- With contrasting color and double-pointed needles, pick up 10 stitches along the bottom edge of the hat. Work in stockinette stitch for 2 inches. Bind off.
- Repeat for second ear flap on the opposite side of the hat.
Finishing:
- Weave in all ends and block the hat to shape. Your dog will look adorable in this cozy hat!
