## Pattern Notes

1. **Continuous rounds:** This hat is worked in continuous spiraling rounds. Do **not** join or turn at the end of each round unless instructed. Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round and move it up as you work — this keeps your round count accurate.

2. **Magic ring:** If you are unfamiliar with a magic ring (also called an adjustable ring), you may substitute by chaining 2 and working the first round's stitches into the 2nd chain from the hook. Pull tight to close the opening.

3. **Tension:** Keep your tension consistent but not too tight — tight tension makes the hat stiff and harder to work in the round. For a beginner, slightly relaxed tension in sc is fine.

4. **Pet safety:** This hat is a **supervised wear item only.** Never leave a hat on an unsupervised pet. The optional chin strap is recommended to prevent the hat from slipping, but ensure it is never tight — you should be able to fit two fingers underneath it comfortably.

### SECTION 5 — Optional Chin Strap / Tie Holes

To help the hat stay on your pet, you can add a simple tie or elastic band.

**Method A — Yarn Ties (Easiest):**
Cut two lengths of yarn approximately 10 inches (25 cm) each. Using your yarn needle or crochet hook, thread one piece through a stitch on the left side of the hat (at the lower edge of the hat body, around Round 12–13), and one piece through a corresponding stitch on the right side. Knot each piece to secure. Tie under your pet's chin in a loose bow. Trim ends as desired.

**Method B — Elastic Channel:**
After fastening off, work a surface slip stitch or whip stitch around the inside of the brim base (at Round 13, where the body meets the brim) to create a channel. Thread ¼-inch (6 mm) elastic through the channel, size to fit your pet's head snugly but comfortably (2 fingers should fit underneath), and join the elastic ends securely. This creates a gentle "stay-put" ring.

> ⚠️ **Safety reminder:** Whichever method you use, always ensure any tie or elastic is loose enough that your pet can breathe freely and move their jaw comfortably. Check fit carefully before letting your pet wear the hat.

## Finishing

1. **Weave in all ends** securely using your yarn needle. For worsted acrylic or wool, weave in at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) in multiple directions to prevent unraveling.
2. **Block if desired:** Lightly spritz with water and shape the brim to lie flat. Allow to dry completely before putting on your pet. (Acrylic yarn does not require blocking but may benefit from light steaming with a damp cloth — do **not** place iron directly on acrylic yarn.)

## Tips for Beginners

- **Magic ring not cooperating?** Use the chain-2 substitute described in Pattern Notes — it works just as well for this project.
- **Losing track of rounds?** Use a different color stitch marker for Round 1 vs. your working-round marker so they are easy to tell apart.
- **Brim curling up?** Work the brim rounds with a slightly looser tension, or go up half a hook size (US 8 / 5 mm) just for the brim section.
- **Hat too big or too small?** Gauge is your best friend. If the crown is too wide before you reach Round 7, stop one round early. If it is too small at Round 7, add one more increase round.
