Walking on Clouds Socks Knitting Pattern

20 stitches and 28 rows = 4 inches/10 cm in stockinette stitch

Instructions:

  1. Cast on 48 (56, 64) stitches using your preferred cast-on method. Divide the stitches evenly among 4 double-pointed needles or set up your circular needles for the magic loop method.
  2. Join in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches. Place a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round.
  3. Cuff:
    • Knit 2, purl 2 ribbing for 1 inch/2.5 cm.
    • Switch to stockinette stitch and knit every round until the cuff measures 6 inches/15 cm from the cast-on edge.
  4. Heel Flap:
    • Row 1 (RS): *Slip 1, knit 1* across all 24 (28, 32) stitches on the first needle.
    • Row 2 (WS): Slip 1, purl to the end.
    • Repeat Rows 1 and 2 a total of 12 (14, 16) times.
  5. Heel Turning:
    • Row 1 (RS): Slip 1, knit 13 (15, 17), ssk, knit 1, turn.
    • Row 2 (WS): Slip 1, purl 6, p2tog, purl 1, turn.
    • Row 3 (RS): Slip 1, knit to 1 stitch before the gap, ssk (to close the gap), knit 1, turn.
    • Row 4 (WS): Slip 1, purl to 1 stitch before the gap, p2tog (to close the gap), purl 1, turn.
    • Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until all stitches have been worked, ending with a WS row.
  6. Gusset:
    • Pick up and knit 12 (14, 16) stitches along the side of the heel flap.
    • Knit across the stitches on the instep needle.
    • Pick up and knit 12 (14, 16) stitches along the other side of the heel flap.
    • Knit half of the heel stitches onto one needle (this will be Needle 1), and divide the remaining heel stitches and instep stitches evenly onto two needles (these will be Needle 2 and Needle 3).
  7. Round 1:
    • Needle 1: Knit to the last 3 stitches, k2tog, knit 1.
    • Needle 2: Knit across.
    • Needle 3: Knit 1, ssk, knit to the end.
  8. Round 2: Knit across all needles.
  9. Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 until there are 48 (56, 64) stitches remaining.
  10. Foot:
    • Continue knitting in the round (stockinette stitch) until the foot measures 1.5 inches/3.8 cm shorter than the desired total foot length.
  11. Toes:
    • Round 1:
      • Needle 1: Knit to the last 3 stitches, k2tog, knit 1.
      • Needle 2: Knit 1, ssk, knit to the last 3 stitches, k2tog, knit 1.
      • Needle 3: Knit 1, ssk, knit to the end.
    • Round 2: Knit across all needles.
    • Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 until there are 24 (28, 32) stitches remaining.
    • Finishing:
      • Use the Kitchener stitch to close the toe stitches.
      • Weave in any remaining ends.
      • Block the socks to shape and size.
