# AUTUMN CASCADE SHAWL

- Approximately 150 yards (137 m) worsted weight in Color F: Variegated Brown (for lace edging)

- US 8 (5 mm) circular needle, 32-40 inches (80-100 cm) long, or size needed to obtain gauge

## GAUGE
18 stitches and 36 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in garter stitch, blocked

**Gauge is not critical for this project,** but will affect final size and yardage requirements.

## PATTERN NOTES

**Construction:** This shawl is worked from the center top down. Increases are worked on every RS row: 2 stitches at the center spine and 1 stitch at each edge (4 stitches increased per RS row).

**Stitch Markers:** Place markers to separate the garter stitch borders from the center section, and to mark the center spine stitch.

**Texture Sections:**
- Section 1 (Color A - Copper): Garter stitch

### SETUP

### SECTION 2: SEED STITCH (Color B - Bone)

Change to Color B.

**Note:** Continue increase rows as established (Row 3 pattern), but work the center section between markers in seed stitch pattern. The 3-stitch garter borders at each edge and the center spine stitch remain in garter stitch.

Remove first and second markers. Place new marker after first 3 sts, and place new marker before center st, place another marker after center st, place final marker before last 3 sts.

**Row 1 (RS):** K1, yo, k2, sm, *work seed stitch to 1 st before marker (maintaining pattern), work yo before marker, sm, k1 (center st), yo, sm, work seed stitch to marker (maintaining pattern), sm, k2, yo, k1. [4 sts increased]

**Seed Stitch Pattern (worked over center stitches):**
- If you knit a stitch on the previous row, purl it on this row
- If you purled a stitch on the previous row, knit it on this row
- On RS rows: Begin and end seed stitch section with k1 after the increases
- On WS rows: Work seed stitch pattern over all center sts

## FINISHING

Weave in all ends, leaving 6-inch tails at color changes if desired for additional security during blocking.

### BLOCKING

Blocking is essential to open up the lace edging and create the proper drape.

1. Soak the shawl in cool water with wool wash for 15-20 minutes.
2. Gently squeeze out excess water (do not wring). Roll in a towel to remove more moisture.
3. Pin shawl to blocking surface, stretching to measurements. Use blocking wires along the top edge and bottom edge for smooth, even lines.
4. Pin out points of lace edging to emphasize pattern.
5. Allow to dry completely (24-48 hours).
