A Simple Two-Color Single Crochet Scarf

A beginner-friendly rectangular scarf worked entirely in single crochet. It is split into two solid color blocks — white for England and sky blue for Argentina — with matching two-tone fringe. No shaping, no fancy stitches: just chains and single crochet.

Construction Notes

The scarf is worked widthwise: each row is 7 in wide, and you build the length by adding rows. You will work the first half in Color A (White) for England, then switch to Color B (Sky Blue) for the second half representing Argentina.

The turning chain (ch 1 at the start of each row) does not count as a stitch. Work your first sc into the very first stitch and your last sc into the last stitch so every row stays at 28 sc.

With Color A (White), ch 29.

Row 1 (RS): Sc in the 2nd ch from hook, then sc in each ch across. Turn. — 28 sc

Do not fasten off at the end of Row 146. Instead, change colors on the last stitch of Row 146:

• Work the final sc of Row 146 until 2 loops remain on the hook.
• Drop Color A, pick up Color B (Sky Blue), and pull it through both loops to complete the stitch.
• Turn. Cut Color A, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail to weave in later.

Argentina Block (Color B – Sky Blue)

Row 147: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. — 28 sc

Continue repeating Row 147 until you have completed 293 rows total.

(Check: 293 − 146 = 147 rows in Color B; 147 ÷ 4.5 ≈ 32.7 in ✓. Total length: 146 + 147 = 293 rows ≈ 65.1 in ✓.)

Fasten off, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail.

Finishing

1. Weave in all ends with the yarn needle, including the color-change tails.
2. Gently steam or wet-block the scarf to even out the edges, if desired.

Fringe (Optional)

For a tidy match to each end, use White fringe on the England (white) end and Sky Blue fringe on the Argentina (blue) end.

To make fringe:

1. Wrap yarn around a 5 in (12.5 cm) piece of cardboard and cut along one edge to make 10 in (25 cm) strands.
2. For each fringe, fold 2 strands in half to form a loop.
3. Insert the hook from back to front through a stitch along the short end of the scarf, pull the folded loop through, then pull the loose ends through the loop and tighten.
4. Space fringes evenly across each end — place 1 fringe every 2 stitches (14 fringes per end).
