Inter Milan Motif Beanie

Worked flat in rows • Easy • Worsted weight

A snug beanie worked entirely in rows, then seamed. Vertical ribbing is crocheted as a strip; the body is single crochet with a centered Inter Milan motif worked from the attached stitch chart. Black, blue, and white recall the Nerazzurri colors. Four sizes.

Shown in size order; instructions are written Child (Adult S, Adult M, Adult L). Choose the size closest to the wearer’s head circumference with about 1½–2½ in (4–6.5 cm) of negative ease. Tapestry fabric inside the motif is less stretchy than plain single crochet; if you are between sizes, size up.

To fit head circumference: 18–19½ (20–21½, 22–23, 23½–24½) in / 45.5–49.5 (51–54.5, 56–58.5, 59.5–62) cm

Add about 30 yd / 27 m of MC and/or CC1 if you make a pom-pom. Add about 30 (35, 40, 45) yd / 27 (32, 37, 41) m of MC if you work the fold-over cuff option.

Use the attached chart’s color key if it names colors differently; map MC = background/black, CC1 = blue, CC2 = white.

Hook

US I-9 / 5.5 mm, or size needed to obtain gauge.

Notions

Yarn needle, 2 stitch markers, scissors. Optional: pom-pom maker.

Gauge

14 sc and 16 rows = 4 in (10 cm) in single crochet with US I-9 / 5.5 mm, unstretched.

Work a 6 in (15 cm) swatch, measure the center 4 in (10 cm). Change hook size if needed. The motif area will feel slightly firmer; do not go down a hook size for the colorwork or the hat will run small.

Special Stitches

Tapestry/intarsia color change: Work the last yo of the stitch before the color change with the new color. Carry unused motif colors on the WS only across the 24-st motif window, laying the unused strand over the top of the stitch and crocheting around it. Do not carry CC1 or CC2 through the MC side panels — drop them at the motif edge and pick them up on the next row. Keep carried strands snug enough to hide, loose enough that the row still stretches.

Pattern Notes

• The hat is worked flat in rows, then seamed. It is not worked in the round and does not begin with a magic ring.
• Ch 1 at the start of a row does not count as a stitch.
• Ribbing uses blo sc so the ridges run vertically once the strip is rotated.
• Body Row 1 is the RS. Odd-numbered body rows are RS; even-numbered body rows are WS.
• Count stitches at the end of every row until the motif is established.
• Weave tails of 6 in (15 cm) as you go at each color join.
• Do not use a pom-pom on hats for children under 3 years.

Fold-over cuff option: For a 4¼ in (11 cm) cuff, ch 16 instead of 8 and work 15 sc for the ribbing width (15 sc ÷ 14 sts × 4 in = 4¼ in ✓). Height becomes about 10¼ (10¾, 11¼, 11¾) in / 26 (27.5, 28.5, 30) cm before folding.

Attached Stitch Chart

Use the separate attached chart panel for the Inter Milan motif. Do not look for a grid in this text; the visual chart is the attached panel, placed at the end of this pattern (or in the adjacent chart panel in a paginated/side-by-side layout).

Where it is used: After the ribbing, on Hat Body rows as written below. The motif sits in the center 24 stitches of the body, beginning on the first motif row for your size and running for 22 chart rows.

How to read the chart (crochet, worked in rows):

• Each filled square = 1 sc in that square’s color.
• You always crochet from right to left relative to the side facing you.
• RS (odd chart rows): read the chart from right to left.
• WS (even chart rows): read the chart from left to right, so the colors still match the RS.
• Follow the attached panel’s color key. Change color in the last yo of the previous sc.
• Carry unused motif colors on the WS inside the 24-st window only. Keep floats/carries on the WS so the RS shows clean color blocks.
• If a chart row is all one color, drop the unused contrast at the window edge rather than carrying it across empty squares.

Color and yarn management:

• MC (black) is the field on both sides of the badge and may also appear inside the motif.
• CC1 (blue) and CC2 (white) are used only where the chart shows them.
• Attach CC1 and CC2 at the first motif stitch that needs them, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail.
• After the last chart row, cut CC1 and CC2 leaving 6 in (15 cm) tails and continue in MC only.

Stitch-count integration (this pattern is written for a 24-st × 22-row chart):

On every motif row: 17 (21, 24, 27) MC, work Chart across 24 sts, 17 (21, 24, 27) MC.

Checks:

• Child: 17 + 24 + 17 = 58 ✓
• Adult S: 21 + 24 + 21 = 66 ✓
• Adult M: 24 + 24 + 24 = 72 ✓
• Adult L: 27 + 24 + 27 = 78 ✓

Place markers on Body Row 1 after the first 17 (21, 24, 27) sts and before the last 17 (21, 24, 27) sts. The 24 sts between markers are the chart window. Slip markers up as you go.

If your attached chart is not 24 stitches wide: count the squares in one full chart row (= W). Stitches in MC on each side = [58 (66, 72, 78) − W] ÷ 2. If W is odd, put the extra MC stitch on the left edge of the RS. W must be less than the body count.

If your attached chart is not 22 rows tall: count the chart rows (= R). Work the MC setup rows and MC rows after the chart so the extra or missing rows are split as evenly as possible above and below the motif, then work the decrease row last. Total body rows should remain 24 (26, 28, 30).

Instructions

Ribbed Brim

With MC, ch 8.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (7 sc ✓) Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc blo in each st across. (7 sc ✓)

Repeat Row 2 until 58 (66, 72, 78) rows have been completed. Do not fasten off.

Ribbing width check: 7 sts ÷ 14 sts × 4 in = 2 in ✓

The long edge of the strip should measure about 16½ (18¾, 20½, 22¼) in / 42 (47.5, 52, 56.5) cm unstretched — the same as the finished hat circumference. Blo sc ribbing often draws in slightly; that extra snap is intended.

Hat Body

Rotate the ribbing so you can work into the row-ends along one long edge (the edge that will become the join between brim and body).

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, work 58 (66, 72, 78) sc evenly along the long edge, placing 1 sc in each ribbing row-end. (58 (66, 72, 78) sc ✓) Place a marker after the first 17 (21, 24, 27) sts and before the last 17 (21, 24, 27) sts. (24 sts between markers ✓)

Child only — begin chart immediately Rows 2–22: Ch 1, turn, sc in MC to first marker, work the next attached-chart row across the 24 sts between markers, sc in MC to end. When the 22 chart rows are complete, cut CC1 and CC2, leaving tails to weave.

Fasten off, leaving a 16 in (40.5 cm) tail for seaming and cinching.

Finishing

Back seam: With RS facing you and the long tail, mattress-stitch the side edges of the body together, then continue the same seam through the short ends of the ribbing so the brim joins in one line. Match row to row. Weave the starting tail.

Crown: Thread the remaining tail onto a yarn needle. Run the needle through all 29 (33, 36, 39) remaining stitches, pull up firmly to close the hole, and stitch across the center a second time. If a small gap remains, take one or two extra stitches over it on the WS. Secure and weave in.

Ends: Weave every color tail on the WS, following the same color so nothing shows on the RS of the motif. Trim.

Optional pom-pom: Make a 2½–3 in (6.5–7.5 cm) pom-pom in MC, or mixed MC and CC1. Tie it tightly through the crown closure. Skip this step for children under 3 years.

Blocking: Do not soak-stretch the ribbing. If the motif curls, hover a steam iron over the RS of the body only and pat flat. Let dry.

Wear with the motif centered at the front and the seam at the center back.
