Lacy Eyelet Coaster

A quick, pretty square coaster worked in a simple all-over eyelet lace. Intermediate-friendly with basic yarn-overs and decreases, perfect for using up leftover worsted cotton. The open fabric is absorbent and looks delicate once blocked.

Materials

• 25–30 yards (23–27 m) worsted weight cotton yarn (e.g., Lily Sugar’n Cream or equivalent; 100% cotton recommended for absorbency)
• US 7 (4.5 mm) straight or circular needles
• Tapestry needle
• Blocking mats and pins (or wires)

Gauge

18 sts and 28 rows = 4" (10 cm) in Eyelet Lace Pattern, blocked. (Gauge is critical for finished size; adjust needle size if needed.)

Finished Size

One size: 4.5" × 4.5" (11.5 × 11.5 cm) square after blocking.

Pattern Notes

• Lace fabric spreads significantly when blocked—do not skip blocking.

• Row 1 (RS): K2, *yo, k2tog; rep from * to last st, k1. (23 sts)

• Row 3 (RS): K1, *k2tog, yo; rep from * to last 2 sts, k2. (23 sts)
• Row 4 (WS): K1, p to last st, k1.

Instructions

CO 23 sts using long-tail cast-on.

Setup row (WS): Knit.

Work Eyelet Lace Pattern Rows 1–4 a total of 8 times (32 rows).
(Inline check: 8 reps × 4 rows = 32 rows ✓; stitch count remains 23 after every RS row because each yo is paired with one k2tog ✓.)

Next row (RS): Knit.

BO all sts knitwise on WS.

Finishing

Weave in ends securely on WS using tapestry needle.
Wet-block: Soak in lukewarm water 15–20 minutes, gently squeeze out water (do not wring). Pin to exact 4.5" × 4.5" square on blocking mats, stretching evenly so eyelets open into neat diamonds. Allow to dry completely.
Optional: Lightly steam on WS if desired, but wet-blocking alone is sufficient for cotton.
