**Scale Stitch (Mermaid Scale):**
A simplified crocodile-stitch-inspired motif worked over a base of dc posts.
- *Setup row:* Work in (dc, ch 1, dc) "V-stitches" across.
- *Scale row:* Working around the post of the first dc of a V-stitch, work 5 dc down the post; ch 1; turn the work slightly and work 5 dc up the post of the next dc of the same V — forms one scale. Sk next V; rep around. (Each scale spans one V-stitch.)

### PART 1 — BODICE (make 2 panels: Front & Back)

Use **Color A (Cream)** throughout bodice.

**Foundation:**
Ch 40.

**Row 1:** Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. **(39 sc)**

**Rows 2–28:** Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. **(39 sc each row)**

*Bodice panel measures approx. 11" wide × 7" tall.*

**Row 29 — Begin armhole/strap shaping:**
Ch 1, sc in first 9 sts. **(9 sc — first strap)** Fasten off, leaving a tail.

Sk next 21 sts (this forms the neckline/armhole opening).
Rejoin Color A in next st: ch 1, sc in last 9 sts, turn. **(9 sc — second strap)**

**Rows 30–34 (each strap, worked separately):**
Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. **(9 sc)**

Fasten off each strap, leaving a 12" tail for shoulder seaming.

### PART 2 — SHOULDER & SIDE SEAMS

1. Lay both panels right sides together.
2. Using yarn tails and a tapestry needle, **whip stitch** the front and back straps together at the shoulders (9 sts each side).
3. **Side seams:** Whip stitch each side from the bottom edge upward, leaving the top **5"** open on each side for the armholes.

Turn right-side out. The bodice is now a tank top.

**Rnd 16 — Setup:** Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. **(162 sc)**

**Rnd 17 — Shell flare round:** Ch 1, sc in first st, *sk 2 sts, 7 dc in next st (shell made), sk 2 sts, sc in next st;* rep from * around. Adjust the final repeat as needed to end with sc; join with sl st to first sc. **(27 shells + 27 sc = 27 fan repeats)**

**Armhole edging (both armholes — Color A):**
With right side facing, join Color A at underarm seam.
**Rnd 1:** Ch 1, sc evenly around armhole opening. Join.
**Rnd 2:** Ch 1, reverse sc (crab stitch) in each st around for a clean rolled edge. Join. Fasten off.

Repeat for second armhole.

### PART 7 — OPTIONAL CHILD-SAFE EMBELLISHMENT (no small parts)

**Optional crocheted starfish appliqué** (sew securely with matching yarn, all around perimeter — no glue, no buttons):

With Color D (yellow), ch 2.

## ✦ Notes for Adjusting Length & Width

- **Wider bodice:** Add stitches in multiples of 2 to the foundation chain. Each +2 sts ≈ +0.5".
- **Longer bodice:** Add plain sc rows before the strap shaping. Each 4 rows ≈ 1".
- **Longer skirt:** Add additional scale color blocks (each block = 2 rnds ≈ 1.25" length). Maintain stitch-multiple consistency.
- **Wider hem flare:** Add an extra increase round before Rnd 15 to bring V-st count to 60 → 180 sc → 30 shells.
- **Shorter fin:** Skip Rnd 16 to bring fin closer to body.

### Strap Width
Keep at 9 sc (~1.5") for 12–18 mo and 18–24 mo; widen to 10–11 sc (~1.75") for 4T/5T to comfortably support a larger frame.

A full multi-size release would require sample testing in each size and verifying walking-stride clearance at the tail-fin hem for each toddler proportion before publication.
