Meadow Breeze Sundress

A seamless top-down sundress for an 8-year-old — fitted bodice, empire waist, gently flared A-line skirt with a lace eyelet hem and I-cord straps.

A romantic warm-weather dress worked in fine sport-weight yarn on small needles for a smooth, drapey fabric. The bodice is shaped with bust darts and a scooped neckline, joined in the round below the arms, then flows into a doubled A-line skirt finished with an elegant eyelet lace border. Advanced techniques: seamless in-the-round construction, empire-waist increase transitions, applied I-cord edging, and lace charting.

Gauge

24 sts × 32 rows = 4 in (10 cm) in stockinette stitch in the round, blocked, on US 2 (2.75 mm). Gauge is critical for fit — knit a 5 in swatch and block before starting.

Math check: 24 sts ÷ 4 in = 6 sts per inch. Bodice 156 sts ÷ 6 = 26 in ✓

Pattern Notes

INSTRUCTIONS

PART 1 — BACK BODICE (worked flat)

With US 2 (2.75 mm) needle, cast on 78 sts using a long-tail cast-on. (This is half of the 156-st bodice; 78 ÷ 6 = 13 in across ✓)

Row 1 (RS): Knit. Row 2 (WS): Purl. Work in St st for 32 rows (approx. 4 in) ending with a WS row.

Waist darts (optional shaping for fit): none needed here — bodice is straight to underarm.

Shape armholes

Row 33 (RS): Bind off 4 sts, k to end. → 74 sts Row 34 (WS): Bind off 4 sts, p to end. → 70 sts Row 35 (RS): K1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. → 68 sts Row 36 (WS): Purl. Rep Rows 35–36 three more times. → 62 sts (Check: 70 − 8 = 62 ✓)

Work even in St st until armhole measures 5 in (13 cm) from start of shaping, ending with a WS row (approx. 40 rows).

Shape back neck

Next row (RS): K18, join a second ball of yarn, bind off center 26 sts, k18. → 18 sts each shoulder Working both shoulders at once: Next row (WS): Purl each side. Neck edge dec row (RS): On left shoulder k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1; on right shoulder k1, ssk, k to end. → 17 sts each Rep dec every RS row 3 times. → 15 sts each shoulder Work even until armhole measures 6 in (15 cm). PART 2 — FRONT BODICE (worked flat)

Work exactly as Back through armhole shaping. → 62 sts after armhole shaping.

Work even until armhole measures 3.5 in (9 cm), ending with a WS row.

Shape front neck (deeper scoop)

Next row (RS): K20, bind off center 22 sts, k20. → 20 sts each shoulder Join second ball; work both sides at once. Neck dec row (RS): work to last 3 sts of first shoulder, k2tog, k1; on second shoulder k1, ssk, work to end. → 19 sts each Rep neck dec every RS row 5 times. → 15 sts each shoulder ✓ (matches back) Work even until armhole measures 6 in (15 cm). Place shoulder sts on holders.

Join shoulders

Using three-needle bind-off, join front and back shoulders (15 + 15 sts each side).

PART 3 — JOIN & WORK BODICE IN THE ROUND

With RS facing and 16 in circular needle, pick up and knit around the two side "body" edges below the armholes so that live underarm stitches form a continuous round.

Arrange live body stitches to total 156 sts around the torso:

• Front lower body: 62 sts
• Back lower body: 62 sts
• Plus 16 sts picked up across the two underarm gaps (8 each side) (62 + 62 + 16 + edge adjustment = 156 sts ✓)

Pm for BOR at left underarm.

Work in St st in the round for 1.5 in (approx. 12 rounds) to reach the natural empire waistline.

Waist band

Work k2, p2 ribbing for 6 rounds (156 ÷ 4 = 39 rib repeats ✓).

PART 4 — SKIRT (in the round, A-line)

Return to St st.

Increase Round A: *K1, m1L, rep from * around. → from 156 to 312 sts (156 × 2 = 312 ✓)

Work even in St st for 10 rounds to let the gather settle.

Continue in St st, working gentle A-line flare with 4 evenly spaced increase columns: Set up: pm every 78 sts (4 markers incl. BOR). → 4 sections of 78 sts Flare inc round: *k to 1 st before marker, m1R, k1, sm, k1, m1L; rep from * around. → 8 sts increased Rep Flare inc round every 12th round, 5 times total. → 312 + (8 × 5) = 352 sts (Check: 352 ÷ 6 = 58.7 in at hem before lace — note: primary A-line fullness comes from the doubling; these gentle increases add swing. If a straighter 52 in hem is preferred, omit the flare increases and keep 312 sts.)

Work even until skirt measures 18 in (46 cm) from waistband, or 2 in short of desired length.

PART 5 — LACE EYELET HEM BORDER

Stitch count must be a multiple of 8.

• If you kept 312 sts: 312 ÷ 8 = 39 repeats ✓
• If you worked to 352 sts: on the next round, k2tog 16 times evenly (352 − 16 = 336; 336 ÷ 8 = 42 repeats ✓) to align to the lace multiple.

Lace Border (8-st repeat, 8 rounds):

• Rnd 1: *k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k3; rep from * around
• Rnd 2 and all even rnds: knit

PART 6 — HEM EDGING (Applied I-cord)

Switch to US 1 (2.5 mm). Cast on 3 sts. Applied I-cord: *k2, ssk (last I-cord st together with 1 hem st), slip 3 sts back to left needle; rep from * around all hem sts. Graft I-cord ends together. This gives a firm, rounded, non-curling hem.

FINISHING

Neckline & Armhole Edging (Applied I-cord)

With US 1 (2.5 mm), work applied I-cord (as above) around:

1. Front neckline
2. Back neckline
3. Each armhole opening Pick up approximately 1 I-cord attachment per stitch/row for a smooth, firm edge.

Straps (I-cord)

Make 2 straps: Cast on 4 sts, work unattached I-cord for 9 in (23 cm) or to fit. Try the dress on the child: pin straps from the front bodice top over the shoulders to the back, crossing at center back if desired. Adjust length, then sew securely to the WS of the bodice edging.

Blocking

Weave in all ends. Wet-block the dress to measurements, pinning the lace hem open to reveal the eyelet pattern. Lay flat to dry.
