A beginner-friendly intarsia colorwork cushion cover

Celebrate Jane Austen’s beloved novel with this 18" square pillow cover. Large, simple intarsia blocks form an open book, quill pen, and heart motif—no stranding or long floats. Worked entirely in single crochet for easy tension control.

Materials

Yarn (worsted weight / category 4; approx. 180 yd / 165 m per 100 g)

• MC (Main Color – soft ivory or parchment): 220 yd / 200 m
• CC1 (Deep burgundy or “claret”): 90 yd / 82 m
• CC2 (Forest green): 60 yd / 55 m
• CC3 (Antique gold): 40 yd / 37 m
• CC4 (Charcoal gray for outlines): 30 yd / 27 m

Hook: US H/8 (5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

• Yarn bobbins or small clips (8–10)

• 18" (45 cm) pillow form
• 3 buttons (¾"/19 mm) for envelope closure (optional)

Gauge

14 sc and 16 rows = 4" (10 cm) in single crochet with US H/8 (5 mm), blocked.
Swatch strongly recommended—intarsia tension can tighten; adjust hook if needed.

Finished Size

One size: 18" × 18" (45 × 45 cm) after seaming, to fit a standard 18" pillow form.

Pattern Notes

• Pillow is made of two identical panels (Front with intarsia motif, Back plain or matching).
• Intarsia method: each color area uses its own bobbin. Do NOT carry unused yarn across the back.
• When changing colors: work the last yarn-over of the previous stitch with the new color.
• Twist yarns at every color change (drop old color, pick up new from underneath) to prevent holes.
• Work all rows in single crochet through both loops.
• Chart is read from bottom to top. RS rows (odd numbers) right-to-left; WS rows (even numbers) left-to-right.
• Beginners: wind bobbins before starting Chart A. Label them.
• Keep floats/twists snug but not tight; blocking will even the fabric.

Row 6 (WS): Work Row 6 of Chart A in sc, changing colors as indicated and using separate bobbins for each color block. (63 sc)
Continue working Chart A Rows 7–56 in sc, reading RS rows right-to-left and WS rows left-to-right. Maintain 63 sts every row.
After Chart Row 56, cut all CCs.

Rows 57–61: With MC only, ch 1, turn; sc in each st across. (63 sc)
Fasten off.

For envelope back (recommended): make two overlapping rectangles

• Lower flap: 63 sts × 40 rows
• Upper flap: 63 sts × 30 rows
  (Overlap ~3" when assembled.)

Finishing

1. Weave in all ends securely on WS, especially intarsia joins.
2. Block both panels to 18" × 18" (45 × 45 cm). Pin flat, spritz or wet-block, and allow to dry completely—this evens intarsia tension.
3. Place Front and Back WS together. With MC, whipstitch or mattress-stitch three sides (bottom + two sides), leaving top open.
   • Envelope version: sew lower flap to Front on three sides; sew upper flap to Front along top edge only; overlap flaps and add 3 button loops + buttons if desired.
4. Insert 18" pillow form.
5. Optional: embroider “P&P” or “1813” in backstitch with CC4 on lower border for extra Austen flair.

Care

Hand wash cold, lay flat to dry. Do not wring colorwork pieces.
