Sunny Days A-Line Sundress

A Beginner-Friendly Knit for an 8-Year-Old

A sweet, breezy sundress worked seamlessly from the top down in the round. The gently flared A-line skirt gives room to twirl, while garter-stitch edges keep everything tidy and curl-free. If you can knit, purl, and count, you can make this dress!

Materials

• Yarn: Worsted weight (US #4 / Aran), approx. 650–700 yards (595–640 m)
  • Suggested: a soft cotton or cotton-blend for summer wear
• Needles:
  • US 8 / 5 mm circular needle, 24 in (60 cm) — main body
  • US 7 / 4.5 mm circular needle, 24 in (60 cm) — bodice edge (optional, for snugger top edge)
  • Set of double-pointed needles or long circular for straps (US 8 / 5 mm)
• Notions:
  • Stitch markers (1 unique color for beginning of round, plus 8 plain markers)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Tape measure
  • Scissors

Gauge

18 sts and 24 rows = 4 in (10 cm) in stockinette stitch (knit every round), worked in the round on US 8 / 5 mm needles, after blocking.

Beginner Tip: Knit a 5 x 5 in swatch in the round (or flat, then measure the center). Gauge determines fit — if your dress is coming out too big, go down a needle size; too small, go up.

Size

Written for US Child's Size 8 (fits chest approx. 26–27 in).

Pattern Notes

• The dress is worked in one piece, in the round, from the top (bust) down.
• The garter-stitch top edge sits just under the arms; straps are added last and can be adjusted for length.
• To knit in the round: after casting on, join without twisting your stitches, and place the BOR marker.
• Garter stitch in the round = alternate one knit round and one purl round.
• Adjusting length: Simply knit more or fewer rounds in the plain skirt section before the hem border. Each additional inch uses ~6 rounds.

Instructions

Bodice (Top Edge)

With US 8 / 5 mm circular needle, cast on 128 sts. Join in the round, being careful not to twist. Place BOR marker.

Garter edge:

• Rnd 1: Knit all sts.
• Rnd 2: Purl all sts.
• Rnds 3–6: Repeat Rnds 1–2 twice more. (6 rounds garter, 3 knit ridges)

Bodice body:

• Knit every round until the bodice measures 5 in (12.5 cm) from cast-on edge (approx. 30 rounds total including garter edge).

Stitch count check: 128 sts → 128 ÷ 18 × 4 = 28.4 in bust ✓

Skirt Shaping (A-Line Flare)

You will work 4 increase rounds, each adding 16 sts (64 sts total added), for a gently flared skirt.

Set-up round: Knit 16, pm. *Knit 16, pm; repeat from * around, placing a total of 8 markers (16 sts between each). BOR marker already in place — you now have 8 sections of 16 sts each = 128 sts.

Increase Round: *K to marker, m1, sm; repeat from * around. (8 sts increased)

Wait — to add 16 sts per round with 8 markers, increase before and after is not needed; instead:

Increase Round (corrected): *K to 1 st before marker, m1, k1, sm, m1; repeat from * around. (16 sts increased — one before and one after each of 8 markers)

Work as follows:

• Increase Round (as above): 16 sts increased.
• Knit 9 rounds even.
• Repeat these 10 rounds a total of 4 times.

Stitch count check: 128 + (16 × 4) = 192 sts ✓ Hem width: 192 ÷ 18 × 4 = 42.7 in ✓

Skirt Body

• Knit every round until skirt measures 14 in (35.5 cm) from the underarm (or 2 in short of your desired total length).

Tip: Try the dress on the child here! It should skim the body and flare gently. Add or subtract rounds to reach the length you want.

Hem Border

• Rnd 1: Purl all sts.
• Rnd 2: Knit all sts.
• Rnds 3–8: Repeat Rnds 1–2 three more times. (8 rounds garter, 4 knit ridges)

Bind off loosely knitwise. A loose bind-off keeps the hem from pulling in.

Straps (Make 2)

The straps hold the dress up at the shoulders. We'll pick up stitches at the front and back top edge.

Placement:

• Lay the dress flat. The BOR marks one side "seam." Divide the top edge into front (64 sts) and back (64 sts).
• For each strap, measure 3.5 in in from each side edge along the top garter edge to find the pick-up spots. (This centers the two straps roughly over the shoulders, ~7 in apart at front and back.)

Knit each strap:

1. With US 8 / 5 mm needle and RS facing, pick up and knit 8 sts along the top garter edge at the front strap position.
2. Work in garter stitch (knit every row, flat):
   • Row 1 (RS): Knit.
   • Row 2 (WS): Knit.
   • Repeat until strap measures 8 in (20 cm), or long enough to reach the corresponding back position when tried on the child.
3. Do not bind off — leave sts on a holder or spare needle.
4. Repeat for the second front strap.

Join to back:

• Try the dress on the child. Bring each strap over the shoulder to the back top edge.
• Line up the live strap stitches with the back edge at the matching position (3.5 in from the side edge).
• Using the tapestry needle, graft or whip-stitch the 8 live stitches securely to the inside of the back garter edge.

Beginner Tip: If grafting feels tricky, simply bind off the strap stitches and sew the bound-off edge firmly to the inside of the back edge with a tapestry needle and matching yarn. Reinforce with a few extra stitches — straps take strain!

Finishing

1. Weave in all ends on the wrong side using the tapestry needle.
2. Block the dress: Soak in cool water with a little wool wash, gently squeeze out excess (don't wring), and lay flat to dry, patting into shape. Blocking evens out stitches and sets the A-line flare.
3. Check strap security — reinforce the join if needed.
