Timeless Cable Book Cover

A elegant, protective knitted book jacket for standard-sized books. It features neat edge flaps that hook over the front and back covers, a classic vertical cable panel on the front, a flexible ribbed spine, and clean garter borders. Worked in DK weight yarn for beautiful drape and stitch definition. Beginner-friendly with a simple 4-stitch cable.

Materials

• Approximately 280–320 yards (255–295 m) of DK weight yarn (Category 3)
• US 6 (4 mm) knitting needles (straight or circular)
• Cable needle
• Tapestry needle

• Optional: 2 stitch markers (to mark garter borders)

Suggested yarn: Smooth wool or wool-blend DK in a solid timeless color (cream, navy, charcoal, forest, or burgundy) for elegant stitch definition and light stretch. Superwash or acrylic blends are practical for a book cover.

Gauge

22 stitches and 30 rows = 4" (10 cm) in Stockinette Stitch on US 6 (4 mm) needles, after blocking.

Important: Cable fabric draws in slightly. Always block your swatch and finished piece. Adjust needle size if needed to match gauge — fit depends on it.

Sizes

One size to fit most standard books approximately 5–6½" (12.5–16.5 cm) wide × 8–9½" (20–24 cm) tall, with spine depth up to 2" (5 cm).

Pattern Notes

• The cover is worked flat in one piece from left flap to right flap. Stitch columns run vertically on the finished book (ideal for cables).
• Garter borders: The first 3 and last 3 stitches of every row are knitted on both RS and WS. This keeps the top and bottom edges flat and polished.
• Keep borders consistent through all sections. Only the center 44 stitches change pattern.
• Section lengths are worked by measurement for best fit. Place a marker or safety pin at each section change if desired.
• Cable pattern is a simple 4-row repeat — perfect for practicing cables.
• Customizing for your book: Measure your book height (H), width (W), and spine (S). Cast on stitches needed for H at your gauge (keep even total if possible and maintain 3-st borders). Work flaps 2½–3½" each, front = W, spine = S, back = W. Re-calculate yardage proportionally if much larger.
• Wet-block firmly after knitting to open the cables and set final dimensions.

Instructions

Left Flap (Stockinette with Garter Borders)

CO 50 sts using a long-tail cast-on.

Row 1 (RS): K3, knit to last 3 sts, k3. Row 2 (WS): K3, purl to last 3 sts, k3.

Repeat Rows 1–2 until piece measures 3" (7.5 cm) from cast-on edge, ending after a WS row.

Front Cover (Cable Pattern)

Begin Cable Pattern on the next RS row. Work the 4-row repeat until the Front section measures 6½" (16.5 cm), ending after a WS row (Row 2 or 4 of pattern).

Cable Pattern (4-row repeat over 50 sts)

• Row 1 (RS): K3, p8, C4F, p8, C4F, p8, C4F, p8, k3.
  (44 interior sts: 3 cables + four p8 panels = 12 + 32 = 44 ✓; total 3 + 44 + 3 = 50 ✓)
• Row 2 (WS): K3, k8, p4, k8, p4, k8, p4, k8, k3.
• Row 3 (RS): K3, p8, k4, p8, k4, p8, k4, p8, k3.
• Row 4 (WS): K3, k8, p4, k8, p4, k8, p4, k8, k3.

Repeat Rows 1–4 for pattern.

Spine (1×1 Rib with Garter Borders)

Next row (RS): K3, *k1, p1; rep from * to last 3 sts, k3.

Repeat these 2 rows until Spine section measures 1½" (4 cm), ending after a WS row.

Back Cover (Stockinette with Garter Borders)

Row 1 (RS): K3, knit to last 3 sts, k3. Row 2 (WS): K3, purl to last 3 sts, k3.

Repeat Rows 1–2 until Back section measures 6½" (16.5 cm), ending after a WS row.

Right Flap (Stockinette with Garter Borders)

Continue in established Stockinette with garter borders until Right Flap measures 3" (7.5 cm), ending after a WS row.

BO all sts knitwise on RS.

Finishing

Weave in all ends securely on the WS using tapestry needle.

Block: Soak in lukewarm water with mild wool wash for 15–20 minutes. Gently squeeze out water (do not wring). Lay flat on blocking mats, pin to exact finished measurements (9" height × 20½" width), taking care to straighten cables and open the front panel. Allow to dry completely.

To use: Open your book. Slide the front cover into the left flap. Wrap the cover around the spine and back. Slide the back cover into the right flap. The flaps hook securely over the covers and the ribbed spine flexes with the book.
