Trademark Texture Dishcloth

A beginner-friendly square dishcloth worked entirely in knit and purl stitches. A centered trademark-style motif is created from the attached stitch chart and framed by simple garter-stitch borders. Perfect for practicing texture reading and producing a useful finished object.

Materials

• Worsted-weight cotton or cotton-blend yarn (approx. 80 yd / 73 m). Sample uses a smooth, light-colored worsted for clear stitch definition.
• US 7 (4.5 mm) knitting needles, or size needed to obtain gauge
• Tapestry needle for weaving ends
• Scissors
• Optional: stitch markers to mark chart section

Gauge

20 stitches and 28 rows = 4" (10 cm) in stockinette stitch, blocked. Gauge is important for finished size and motif proportions; adjust needle size if necessary.

Finished Size

One size: 8.5" × 8.5" (21.5 × 21.5 cm) blocked.

Pattern Notes

• The entire cloth is worked flat.
• Only knit and purl stitches are used.
• The trademark motif is worked from the Attached Stitch Chart (see section below). Do not rely on any other visual.
• Slip the first stitch of every row purlwise with yarn in front for a neat edge (optional but recommended).
• Stitch count remains 43 stitches every row.
• Wet-block the finished cloth flat to open the texture and set the square shape.

Attached Stitch Chart

Use the separate attached chart panel supplied with this pattern for the visual grid of the trademark motif. The chart appears as the companion panel immediately following this written pattern (or in the pattern’s chart/attachment area of your document viewer).

How to read the chart (knitting, flat):

• Each square = 1 stitch.
• RS rows (odd numbers) are read right to left.
• WS rows (even numbers) are read left to right.
• Empty/white squares = knit on RS, purl on WS (stockinette background).
• Filled/dark squares = purl on RS, knit on WS (reverse-stockinette / motif texture).
• Work the 25-stitch chart panel exactly once per chart row; do not add extra repeats.
• No color changes occur; the “Markenzeichen” (trademark) design is formed purely by knit/purl texture. Use a single yarn throughout.
• Chart is 25 stitches wide × 25 rows tall. It sits between the side garter borders (9 sts each side). Row gauge and stitch gauge keep the motif centered and roughly square when blocked.

Stitch-count integration:
9 (right garter border) + 25 (chart) + 9 (left garter border) = 43 sts.
Maintain these 43 stitches on every row.

Instructions

Bottom Border CO 43 sts. Rows 1–6: Knit every stitch (garter stitch).

Set-up for Motif Place optional markers after the first 9 sts and before the last 9 sts to isolate the center 25-st chart panel.

Trademark Motif Section Work the next 25 rows as follows:

• On every row: k9 (border), work the next 25 sts from the Attached Stitch Chart (reading direction as noted above), k9 (border).
• Continue until all 25 rows of the chart are complete. Stitch count remains 43.

Top Border Rows 1–6: Knit every stitch (garter stitch).

Bind off knitwise on the next RS row. Cut yarn, leaving a 6" tail.

Finishing

Weave in all ends securely on the WS with the tapestry needle.
Wet-block: soak briefly in lukewarm water, gently squeeze out excess water (do not wring), pin flat to 8.5" × 8.5" square, and allow to dry completely. This opens the knit/purl texture so the trademark motif is crisp and the cloth lies flat.
