Twinkle Square — A 21×21 Star Motif

Description

A cheerful five-point star worked in two colors on a small stockinette square. Because the pattern uses no increases or decreases, the stitch count stays constant at 21 stitches throughout, making it a perfect first colorwork project. The finished square is ideal as a coaster, mug rug, appliqué patch, or a single block in a larger blanket.

Materials

• Yarn: Worsted weight (medium / #4), smooth wool or wool-blend recommended for stitch definition.
  • Color A (Background): approx. 15 yds (14 m)
  • Color B (Star): approx. 10 yds (9 m)
  • Total: approx. 25 yds (23 m). One skein of each color is far more than enough.
• Needles: US 7 / 4.5 mm straight or circular needles (or size needed to obtain gauge).
• Notions: Tapestry needle, scissors, 2 small bobbins (optional, for color management).

Gauge

• 20 stitches and 26 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch, blocked.
• Gauge is not critical for fit, but it determines the finished dimensions. A swatch is recommended to confirm your fabric density.

Finished Size

• Width: 21 sts ÷ (20 sts / 4") = 4.2 in (10.7 cm)
• Height: 21 rows ÷ (26 rows / 4") = 3.23 in (8.2 cm)
• The piece is a 21×21 grid; with typical stockinette row-to-stitch ratio it appears slightly wider than tall. Light blocking evens the shape.

Pattern Notes

• The square is worked flat, back and forth, in stockinette stitch (knit RS rows, purl WS rows).
• No shaping: you keep 21 sts on every row. Do not increase or decrease.
• All color changes are guided by the attached stitch chart (see next section).
• This is an intarsia colorwork piece: use a separate strand (or bobbin) for each block of color and twist the two yarns around each other at every color change to prevent holes.
• On this small motif, floats are short; you may alternatively strand (carry) the unused color loosely across the back if you prefer, but intarsia gives the cleanest result.

Attached Stitch Chart

• Placement: The chart is provided as a separate 21×21 asset attached to this pattern, positioned immediately following this pattern document. Each square on the chart equals one stitch; there are 21 columns (stitches) and 21 rows.
• How to read it (flat knitting):
  • Read the chart from the bottom up (Row 1 at the bottom, Row 21 at the top).
  • Read RS rows (odd rows: 1, 3, 5 …) from RIGHT to LEFT.
  • Read WS rows (even rows: 2, 4, 6 …) from LEFT to RIGHT.
  • Squares in the background color = knit with A (RS) / purl with A (WS).
  • Squares in the star color = knit with B (RS) / purl with B (WS).
• Color-change handling: Wherever the chart color changes within a row, drop the old color, pick up the new color from underneath the old strand (twisting them once) to lock the stitches together, then continue. Keep tension relaxed at the join.
• Stitch-count integration: Every chart row totals 21 stitches (A squares + B squares = 21). Count across each completed row to confirm you still have 21 sts before turning your work. The chart adds no increases or decreases, so your needle count never changes.

Instructions

Setup

With Color A, CO 21 sts.

Body — Follow the Attached Chart (Rows 1–21)

Work in stockinette stitch, changing colors as directed by the attached chart:

• Row 1 (RS): Reading the chart Row 1 from right to left, k across, using A or B as each square indicates. (21 sts)
• Row 2 (WS): Reading the chart Row 2 from left to right, p across, using A or B as each square indicates. (21 sts)
• Rows 3–21: Continue in this manner — knit all RS (odd) rows reading right-to-left, purl all WS (even) rows reading left-to-right — matching every stitch to its chart square. (21 sts each row)

After completing Row 21, the full five-point star will be visible on a background of Color A.

Tip: The star typically begins around Rows 4–5 (lower points), widens through the middle rows (the star's arms), and narrows to the single top point near Row 20–21. Use a row counter or a sticky note under your current chart row to stay on track.

Bind Off

Break Color B, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail. With Color A (on a RS row for a tidy edge), BO all 21 sts knitwise.

Finishing

1. Weave in ends: Thread each tail onto the tapestry needle and weave into the back of matching-color stitches for about 1 in (2.5 cm), securing all color-change tails especially well.
2. Close small gaps: If any tiny holes appear at color changes, use a matching tail to snug them closed on the wrong side.
3. Block: Wet-block or steam-block gently. Pin the square flat, coaxing it into a true rectangle (about 4.2 × 3.23 in / 10.7 × 8.2 cm), and let dry completely. Blocking dramatically improves the star's crispness.

Optional Uses

• Coaster / mug rug: Use as-is, or back with felt.
• Appliqué: Whipstitch onto a hat, bag, or sweater.
• Blanket block: Make several and seam together with mattress stitch for a star-studded throw.

Math check: CO 21 sts → no shaping → 21 sts every row → BO 21 sts. Chart is 21 cols × 21 rows, one square per stitch/row, confirming a fully consistent 21×21 motif. ✓
