12 Dinosaurs Knitting Charts (Pixel Fair Isle / Intarsia Friendly)

Designed for small motifs to add to sweaters, hats, scarves or to make 12 little motif swatches. Each chart is worked flat (RS rows: right to left; WS rows: left to right) unless you plan to duplicate-stitch after knitting the background. Charts are 20 stitches wide x 16 rows high. Symbols: "."=background, "G"=body (main color), "D"=detail/shade, "Y"=eye/horn/highlight, "B"=beak/crest/contrast. Use stranded colorwork (Fair Isle) for small color areas; use intarsia for large color blocks. Duplicate stitch is recommended for tiny details (eyes, teeth).

Materials

  • Suggested yarn: DK / Light Worsted (approx. Imperial: 218 yds per 100g; Metric: 200 m per 100g). For 12 motifs used as small patches you will need approx 50g total (varied by colors). If knitting into a garment, plan yarn amounts per garment gauge.
  • Needles (recommended): US 6 / UK 7 / Metric 4.0 mm. Alternate for looser fabric: US 7 / UK 6 / Metric 4.5 mm.
  • Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch markers, bobbins/weighted yarn for stranded work, waste yarn for intarsia tails if needed.

Gauge (recommended swatch)

20 sts x 28 rows = 4" (10 cm) in stockinette on US 6 (4.0 mm). Charts are sized in stitches and rows; change needle size if you need a different finished motif size.

Abbreviations & Notes

  • K = knit, P = purl.
  • Chart legend: work every symbol as a knit stitch on RS rows and as purl on WS rows when using chart for colorwork (stranded). If using intarsia, follow color changes in chart but always work the stitch as stockinette (knit RS, purl WS).
  • Carry floats no more than 5 stitches; twist colors when crossing a float to avoid long floats.
  • Small single-stitch detail (eyes) can be duplicate-stitched after blocking for crispness.

Charts (20 sts x 16 rows each)

Each chart block shows row numbers at left (16 top to 1 bottom). Read RS rows right-to-left; WS rows left-to-right. Background is "." — choose a single background color for all motifs if repeating across a project.

Color Key & Suggested Colors

  • Background (.) — choose one contrasting color for all motifs if working a repeat (e.g., Cream or Sky Blue).
  • G — Main body (e.g., Olive Green, Teal, Rust) — choose 1 main body color per motif or swap across motifs.
  • D — Dark shade / plate / sail detail (Charcoal, Deep Brown).
  • Y — Yellow/cream highlight (eye, horn).
  • B — Bright accent (beak/crest, e.g., Orange or Red).

How to Use These Charts

  1. Print or display the chart at 100% — each square is one stitch.
  2. Place the chart on your working row: center a motif on the front of a sweater, repeat across a band, or use as intarsia patches.
  3. For stranded work: carry background yarn across WS rows when not in use; catch floats on the RS occasionally to secure long floats.
  4. For intarsia: use separate bobbins or small yarn balls for each large color block and twist joins when changing colors to avoid holes.
  5. Tweaks: increase chart size by using a smaller needle and lighter yarn or duplicate-stitch for single-stitch corrections after knitting.
