Thumb Gusset:

Using the long tail cast on method, cast on 36 (40, 44) stitches. Divide the stitches evenly across 3-4 double-pointed needles.

Round 1: K18 (20, 22), PM, K2, PM, K to end of round.

Rounds 2-4: Knit all stitches.

Round 5: K18 (20, 22), PM, K2 (marker for thumb gusset), M1R, K1, M1L, K to end of round.

Round 6: Knit all stitches.

Repeat Rounds 5-6 until there are 18 (20, 22) stitches between the thumb markers.

Main Hand:

Next Round: K18 (20, 22), remove thumb markers, place thumb stitches on holder or waste yarn, K to end of round.

Continue knitting in rounds for desired length.

Cuff:

Work *K2, P2* ribbing for 1.5 inches (3.8 cm).

Bind off in pattern.

Thumb:

Transfer the thumb stitches from the holder or waste yarn onto double-pointed needles.

Join yarn at the base of the thumb and pick up 2 stitches over the gap.

Knit in rounds until the thumb measures 2 inches (5 cm).

Decrease Round: *K1, K2tog, K to 3 stitches before end of thumb, SSK, K1*. Repeat * to * on the next round.

Repeat the last 2 rounds until there are 4 stitches remaining.

Finishing: Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the thumb.

Weave in all loose ends and block the mittens to shape.
