A compact, cozy "snarf": a hood attached to a long scarf. This pattern is designed for knitters of basic intermediate level—simple construction, reversible edges and a neat folded hood. Choose the size that fits the wearer, or customize easily by adjusting length and hood depth.
18 sts x 24 rows = 4" (10 cm) in stockinette stitch on US 8 / 5.0 mm needles. Gauge is not critical for fit of hooded scarf but will affect finished width and yarn required. Adjust needle size if needed.
Using US 7 (4.5 mm) needles if you want a slightly firmer edge, otherwise US 8 (5.0 mm). Cast on:
Setup row (WS): k3, purl to last 3 sts, k3. (This sets the 3-st garter selvedges.)
Row 1 (RS): k3, knit to last 3 sts, k3.
Row 2 (WS): k3, purl to last 3 sts, k3.
Work these two rows until piece measures:
End with 6 rows of garter stitch on both ends to match start (knit every row) so each end has a neat reversible edge. Bind off loosely in pattern (k3, purl across last 3 sts as appropriate).
This method knits a rectangular hood that will be folded and seamed at the crown, then stitched to the center of the scarf.
1) Cast on the same number of sts as your scarf width (S:36, M:40, L:44) on US 8 / 5.0 mm needles.
2) Work in stockinette with a 3-st garter selvedge each side (same as scarf) until the piece measures twice the hood depth for your size:
3) Bind off all sts. Fold hood piece lengthwise so the Right Sides meet and the cast-on and bind-off edges are aligned. Seam the top (folded edge) down the center back with mattress stitch to create the crown. You can taper the crown for a rounder top by decreasing 6–10 sts evenly across the last 8–10 rows before binding off: (k8, k2tog across) repeat on WS as purl if you want shaping — optional.
4) Position the hood at the center of the scarf: fold scarf in half lengthwise to find center point, open back up and align the hood's lower edge to the center of the scarf, centering the hood on the middle of the scarf length. Sew the hood to the scarf using mattress stitch through the cast-on/bound-off edges so the seam is neat on the inside. Leave the seam edges tidy.
1) With scarf lying flat and RS up, find the center point of the scarf lengthwise. Decide hood width = full scarf width. 2) With waste yarn or right yarn, using a circular or straight needles, pick up and knit every stitch across the center of the scarf from one WS edge to the other (pick up through the fabric along the center line) to get the same stitch count as your cast-on (S:36, M:40, L:44). 3) Work as for the separate hood: stockinette with 3-st garter selvedges until piece measures hood depth (S:6", M:8", L:10"). To create the crown, decrease at each end every 6th row: k2tog at the beginning and ssk at the end of every RS row for 6–8 repeats to form a tapered crown; when 6–8 sts remain, BO. Fold hood and sew the short seams to finish crown. Weave in ends and tidy. 4) Finish the lower edge of the hood by mattress-stitching the pick-up edge (or the hood lower border if knitted separately) to the scarf centerline, matching stitches neatly so stitches sit evenly on the scarf top edge.
