Baby Star Suit & Cap

An intermediate button-front baby romper with matching five-point star cap. Worked in worsted weight for a soft, structured costume or photo prop. Short sleeves and legs keep the silhouette crisp; center-front buttons and crotch closures make dressing easy.

Materials

• Worsted weight yarn (category 4), approx. 380 (450) yd / 350 (410) m main color (MC; yellow recommended)
• Small amount of contrasting worsted for optional face embroidery or star cheeks (CC)
• US H/8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge
• US G/6 (4.0 mm) hook for button bands and edging (optional, for neater finish)
• 5 (6) buttons, ½″ / 12 mm diameter
• 3 snap fasteners or additional small buttons for crotch (optional)
• Yarn needle, stitch markers, scissors, measuring tape

Gauge

14 hdc and 11 rows = 4″ / 10 cm with larger hook in hdc, blocked.
Check gauge. Change hook size if necessary to obtain correct measurements.

Pattern Notes

• Turning ch-1 at start of hdc rows does not count as a stitch. Turning ch-1 for sc rows does not count as a stitch.
• Cap is worked in continuous spirals unless stated; mark first st of each rnd.
• Romper pieces are worked flat in rows.
• Stitch counts appear in parentheses at the end of each row/rnd.
• When only one number is given it applies to both sizes.
• Keep a consistent tension on button bands so the front edges do not flare.
• Weave in ends as you go where practical.

Special Stitch

hdc2tog: Yarn over, insert hook in next st, yarn over, pull up loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, insert hook in following st, yarn over, pull up loop (5 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through all 5 loops.

STAR CAP

With larger hook and MC, make a magic ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, 8 hdc in ring, pull ring closed. Do not join—work in continuous spiral. Pm in first st. (8 hdc)

Rnd 2: 2 hdc in each st around. (16 hdc)

Rnd 3: *1 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st; rep from * around. (24 hdc)

Rnd 4: *1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st; rep from * around. (32 hdc)

Rnd 5: *1 hdc in each of next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st; rep from * around. (40 hdc)

Rnd 6: *1 hdc in each of next 4 sts, 2 hdc in next st; rep from * around. (48 hdc)
Size 0–3 only: Skip to Rnd 8.

Rnd 7 (size 3–6 only): *1 hdc in each of next 5 sts, 2 hdc in next st; rep from * around. (56 hdc)

Divide for Star Points

Place 5 markers to divide the round as evenly as possible:

• 0–3 mo (48 sts): 10, 10, 10, 9, 9
• 3–6 mo (56 sts): 12, 11, 11, 11, 11

You will work each point separately back and forth in rows. Fasten off after each point, or carry yarn loosely behind if preferred.

Point (make 5)

Join MC with sl st in first st of a marked section.

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, hdc in each st of this section, turn.
10 (12, 11, 11, 11) or 10 (11) hdc depending on section.

Row 2: Ch 1, hdc2tog, hdc across to last 2 sts, hdc2tog, turn. (2 sts decreased)

Row 3: Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn.

Rep Rows 2–3 until 2 sts remain, ending after a decrease row.

Final row: Ch 1, hdc2tog. Fasten off, leaving a 6″ tail.

Tip: On sections that began with 9 sts, you will reach 1 st one row earlier—finish with a single sc or sl st and fasten off.

Cap Edging

With RS facing and smaller hook (optional), join MC at any valley between points. Work 1 rnd of sc evenly around entire lower edge (valleys and sides of points), placing 1 sc in each row end and 1 sc in each valley st. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

Optional: Embroider a simple star or cheeks with CC on one side of the cap.

STAR SUIT (ROMPER)

Back

With larger hook and MC, ch 31 (35).

Row 1 (RS): Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (30 (34) hdc)

Rows 2–16 (2–18): Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn.
Piece measures approx. 6 (6.5)″ / 15 (16.5) cm from beg.

Armhole shaping

Row 17 (19): Ch 1, sl st in first 3 sts, ch 1, hdc in next 24 (28) sts, leave last 3 sts unworked, turn. (24 (28) hdc)

Rows 18–26 (20–29): Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn.

Legs (make 2)

Row 1 (RS): Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (18 (20) hdc)

Rows 2–6 (2–7): Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn.

Row 7 (8) (inc): Ch 1, 2 hdc in first st, hdc across to last st, 2 hdc in last st, turn. (20 (22) hdc)

Rows 8–10 (9–12): Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Assembly

1. Sew shoulder seams (7 (8) sts each side).
2. Set in sleeves, matching underarm shaping; sew sleeve seams.
3. Sew side seams from underarm to bottom of body.
4. Sew inner leg seams of each leg piece.
5. Attach legs to lower edge of body: center each leg on front/back, leaving a center crotch gap of approx. 2.5 (3)″ / 6.5 (7.5) cm between legs. Sew securely. The remaining center front and back crotch edges will be finished with edging and closures.

Button Bands & Edging

Use smaller hook if desired for a firmer band.

Left Front Band (buttonhole band – as worn)

With RS facing, join MC at lower left front corner (bottom of opening).

Row 1: Ch 1, work 42 (48) sc evenly up center front edge to neck, turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Row 3 (buttonholes): Ch 1, sc in first 3 sts, *ch 2, skip 2 sc, sc in next 6 (7) sts; rep from * 4 (5) more times, sc in any remaining sts to end (adjust final spacing by 1 st if needed so the top buttonhole sits near the neck), turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each sc and 2 sc in each ch-2 sp across. Fasten off.

Right Front Band (button band)

With RS facing, join MC at neck edge of right front.

Row 1: Ch 1, work 42 (48) sc evenly down center front edge to bottom, turn.

Rows 2–4: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. Fasten off after Row 4.

Neck Edging

With RS facing, join MC at top of right front band. Work 1 rnd of sc evenly around neckline (including back neck and tops of bands), working 2–3 sc in corners if needed for flatness. Join and fasten off.

Crotch & Leg Edging

With RS facing, join MC at any crotch corner. Work 1 rnd of sc around both leg openings and the front/back crotch edges, placing 3 sc in outer corners. Join.

On the back crotch edge only, you may add 3 small ch-2 buttonholes evenly spaced, or sew snap fasteners to front and back crotch after weaving ends.

Lower Sleeve Edging (optional)

Join MC at sleeve seam, sc evenly around cuff; join and fasten off.

Finishing

• Weave in all remaining ends.
• Block pieces gently to measurements (steam or wet block; pin star points of cap so they lie flat and sharp).
• Sew buttons on right front band opposite buttonholes.
• Attach crotch snaps or buttons.
• Optional: with CC, embroider a small star, smile, or constellation on the chest.

Wear Notes

Dress baby by opening the full front placket and crotch. The star cap sits with one point centered at the front or slightly to the side. Supervise baby during wear; this is a costume/photo garment—do not leave unattended with buttons or appliqués.
