# Celtic Crossroads Sampler Afghan

A richly textured worsted-weight blanket combining a central **Celtic Knot** cable, two **Honeycomb** cable panels, two **OXO (double) cable** panels and generous **Moss stitch** fillers and border. Worked flat in one piece. Charts provided for all cabled panels.

## MATERIALS

- **Yarn:** Worsted-weight (Aran) wool or wool-blend, approx. **1,500–1,600 m total** (1,600–1,750 yds). Suggested ~16–17 × 100 g balls at ~95 m/ball.
- **Needles:** 5.0 mm (UK metric) circular needle, 100 cm length (used flat to hold the wide piece). Use a second 5.0 mm needle if you prefer. *(US 8)*
- **Cable needle** (cn).
- **Stitch markers** (10) to separate panels.
- **Tapestry/darning needle** for weaving in ends.
- Optional: blocking mats and rust-proof pins.

## GAUGE (TENSION)

- **18 sts × 26 rows = 10 cm (4")** measured over **Moss stitch / mixed cable panel pattern**, after blocking.
- *Note:* Cables pull in; always measure tension across the actual panel layout, not in stocking stitch. Work a 15 cm swatch in Moss stitch plus one Honeycomb repeat to confirm.

### MOSS STITCH SETUP

- **Moss border / fillers (worked over any st count):**
  - Row 1 (RS): *k1, p1; rep.
  - Row 2 (WS): work sts as they appear (purl the knits, knit the purls) — i.e. *p1, k1 offset* to keep the moss (seed) texture.
  - Over a 14-st border: (k1,p1)×7 on RS; reverse on WS.

### BODY — repeat the following row sequence

Work **bottom Moss band first**: work **all 204 sts in Moss stitch for 14 rows** (≈ 5 cm) to anchor the lower edge.

Then begin the patterned body, working each section per its chart while keeping borders and fillers in Moss stitch:

- **RS rows:** Moss 14 → Chart A (HC) → Moss 4 → Chart B (OXO) → Moss 5 → Chart A → Moss 6 → Chart C (Celtic) → Moss 6 → Chart A → Moss 5 → Chart B → Moss 4 → Chart A → Moss 14.

## BORDER

The blanket is finished with its integrated **14-st Moss stitch side borders** and **14-row Moss bands** top and bottom — no separate pick-up border required, giving clean, flat, non-curling edges.

*If you prefer an applied edge:* with RS facing and 5.0 mm needle, pick up and knit evenly around (approx. 3 sts per 4 rows along sides, 1 st per st along top/bottom), work 6 rounds Moss stitch, increasing 2 sts at each corner on alternate rounds to keep corners flat. Cast off in pattern.

## FINISHING

1. **Weave in all ends** securely along purl bumps on the WS.
2. **Block (cables):** Wet or damp block. Press gently between towels or steam **without overstretching** — cables should stay plump. Pin to **114 × 152 cm (45 × 60")**, easing the Celtic Knot open so the interlace shows. Allow to dry completely flat.
3. Do **not** aggressively stretch the cabled panels — unlike lace, cables should keep their depth.
4. Optional: add tassels or pompoms to the four corners using leftover yarn.
