Materials

• Worsted weight wool yarn (category 4), approx 150 yd (137 m) total
• Size H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook
• Yarn needle
• Stitch marker
• One ¾" (2 cm) button (optional, for holding flap open)

Gauge

14 hdc and 10 rows = 4" (10 cm) in hdc worked in continuous rounds.
Adjust hook size if needed to obtain gauge.

Notes

• Mitts are worked in continuous rounds (spiral). Do not join at end of rounds unless instructed; use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round.
• No thumb opening is made—the mitt is a simple tube.
• The convertible flap is worked separately and sewn only to the back half of the upper edge so it flips over the fingers.
• Instructions are written for one mitt; make two alike.

Cuff

Ch 32. Being careful not to twist, join with sl st to first ch to form a ring. Pm for beginning of rnd.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around. (32 sc)
Rnds 2–10: Sc blo in each st around. (32 sts)
Cuff measures approx 2½" (6.5 cm).

Hand

Rnd 11: Hdc in each st around. (32 hdc)
Rnds 12–22: Hdc in each st around. (32 hdc)
Hand measures approx 4" (10 cm). Total length from cuff edge is 6½" (16.5 cm).
Fasten off. Weave in end.

Convertible Mitten Flap (make 1 per mitt)

Ch 32. Being careful not to twist, join with sl st to first ch to form a ring. Pm.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, hdc in each ch around. (32 hdc)
Rnds 2–8: Hdc in each st around. (32 hdc)
Rnd 9 (decrease rnd): *Hdc in next 2 sts, hdc2tog; rep from * around. (24 sts)
Rnd 10: Hdc in each st around. (24 hdc)
Rnd 11: *Hdc in next st, hdc2tog; rep from * around. (16 sts)
Rnd 12: Hdc2tog around. (8 sts)
Fasten off, leaving a 12" (30 cm) tail. Thread tail through remaining 8 sts, pull tight to close top of flap, and weave in end securely.

Assembly

1. Lay mitt flat with the starting join of the hand at one side edge. The “back” of the hand is the half opposite the palm side (you may try the mitt on to identify the back).
2. Pin the open edge of the flap to the back 16 stitches only of the top edge of the mitt (half the circumference). Align edges evenly.
3. Using yarn needle and matching yarn, whipstitch the flap to those 16 stitches only. Leave the front 16 stitches free so fingers can emerge when the flap is flipped back.
4. Optional button closure: With flap flipped back (open position), sew button to the back of the hand near the cuff-to-hand transition. Make a small chain-loop buttonhole on the underside tip of the flap if desired, or simply tuck the flap.
5. Weave in all remaining ends. Block lightly if desired.

Finishing

Make second mitt identical to the first.

Wearing: Wear as fingerless mitts with flap folded back. Flip flap forward over fingertips for full mitten warmth. No thumb hole means the mitt slides on easily and fits snugly around the whole hand.
