Intermediate Crochet Pattern – Worsted Weight

Finished Measurements (Medium)

• Chest (top band, unstretched): 13–15" (33–38 cm)
• Neck ties: adjustable
• Skirt waist: 11–13" (28–33 cm)
• Skirt length (waist to hem): 3.5–4.5" (9–11.5 cm) mini
• Leg openings: approx. 8" (20 cm) circumference each
• Tail opening: 1.5–2" (4–5 cm) built into crotch join

Yarn
Worsted weight (category 4) cotton or cotton-blend recommended for washability and breathability (approx. 150–180 yd / 137–165 m total).
Example: 1 skein main color (MC) for skirt + top body, small amount contrasting color (CC) optional for edging/ties.

Hook
US H/8 (5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge.
US G/6 (4 mm) optional for tighter ties/edging.

Notions
Yarn needle, scissors, stitch markers, ½" (1.3 cm) wide elastic (8–12" / 20–30 cm length for waistband, optional), matching sewing thread & needle if using elastic.

Gauge
14 hdc and 10 rows = 4" × 4" (10 × 10 cm) in hdc, unblocked.
Check gauge! A 4" swatch is essential for small-dog fit. Adjust hook size up or down before starting.

Notes

• Pattern written for one size (Medium Yorkie 14 lb). To customize: measure dog’s chest girth behind front legs, waist/belly girth, and desired skirt length. Add/subtract 2 hdc ≈ ½".
• Work hdc loosely for drape. Join rounds with sl st to first hdc unless noted; ch 1 at start of hdc rounds does not count as a stitch.
• Dog safety: ties must be secure but quick-release; never leave dog unsupervised in costume; ensure full leg/tail/movement freedom and no rubbing.
• Inline validation shown as (math ✓).

Part 1: Mini Skirt (adapted bottom-up construction)

Gauge Swatch

With MC and H/8 hook, ch 18.
Row 1: hdc in 3rd ch from hook and each ch across (16 hdc).
Rows 2–12: ch 1, turn, hdc in each st across.
Measure center 4" × 4". Adjust hook until exact. Fasten off. (14 sts × 10 rows = 4" ✓)

Legs (Bottom-Up Hem Panels)

Make 2 identical leg panels.
With MC, ch 30 (multiple that yields ~8" leg opening at gauge: 28 hdc + 2 turning = start).
Rnd 1: hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch around; join with sl st to first hdc, being careful not to twist (28 hdc). Pm for beg of rnd. (28 sts = 8" ✓)
Rnds 2–4: ch 1, hdc in each st around, join (28 hdc).
Work even until panel measures 1.5" (4 cm) from hem to crotch level, or desired short-shorts length. Fasten off first leg. Do not fasten off second leg.

Optional leg shaping (default = straight): For slight flare, on Rnd 3 only: [hdc in next 13 sts, 2 hdc in next st] twice (30 hdc). Return to 28 sts next rnd with 2 even decreases if preferred. Straight is recommended for mini dog skirt.

Joining and Crotch/Tail Shaping

With second leg still on hook, ch 3 (half of crotch base).
Join to first leg with sl st in any st of first leg (align so both hems face same direction).
Ch 3 more (total 6 ch for crotch/tail base), then continue hdc around first leg (28 hdc), hdc in each of next 3 ch, hdc around second leg (28 hdc), hdc in each of remaining 3 ch; join to first hdc. (28 + 28 + 6 = 62 sts ✓)
Pm at each side “hip” and at center front/back if desired.

Crotch/tail short-row curve (prevents bulk):
Rnd 1 (shaping): ch 1, hdc in next 28 sts (first leg), hdc in next 2 ch, sc in next 2 ch (center under-tail), hdc in next 2 ch, hdc in next 28 sts (second leg), hdc in remaining sts to end; join (62 sts).
Rnd 2: ch 1, hdc around, working hdc2tog over the 2 center sc from previous rnd (decrease 1 at tail base); join (61 sts).
Rnd 3: ch 1, hdc around, working 2 even hdc2tog spaced near center back/tail (decrease 2); join (59 sts).
These short rows / strategic decreases create a gentle curve and small tail-friendly opening. (62 – 1 – 2 = 59 ✓)

Body Shaping (Upward to Waist)

Continue in joined rnds for mini length.
Rnds 4–6: ch 1, hdc in each st around, join (59 hdc).
Hip-to-waist shaping (gentle decrease for dog belly):
Rnd 7: ch 1, [hdc in next 12 sts, hdc2tog] 4 times, hdc in last 3 sts; join (59 – 4 = 55 sts ✓).
Rnd 8: ch 1, hdc around (55 hdc).
Rnd 9: ch 1, [hdc in next 9 sts, hdc2tog] 5 times; join (55 – 5 = 50 sts ✓).
Rnd 10: ch 1, hdc around (50 hdc).
If longer skirt desired, add even hdc rnds before decreases. Target waist circumference ~12" (50 hdc ÷ 14 sts/4" ≈ 14.3" unstretched, settles to 11–13" with drape/elastic ✓).

Waistband

Option A – Folded Waistband (elastic casing, recommended):
Rnds 11–14: ch 1, sc in each st around, join (50 sc).
Fasten off, leaving 18" tail. Fold band down to WS so top edge meets Rnd 10. Whip-stitch in place, leaving 1" opening. Cut elastic 1–2" shorter than dog’s waist, thread through casing with safety pin, overlap ends ½" and sew securely. Close opening. (Elastic length example: 10" for 12" waist ✓)

Option B – Ribbed Waistband:
With smaller hook if desired, ch 7.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (6 sc).
Rows 2–50: ch 1, turn, sc BLO in each st across (6 sc). Band should measure ~12" slightly stretched.
Sew short ends together to form ring. Pin to top of skirt (RS together), sc or whip-stitch evenly around (50 sts to 50 rows ✓). Weave elastic through BLO ridges if extra security wanted; sew ends.

Skirt Finishing

Weave in all ends securely on WS. Block lightly by dampening and patting into shape (do not stretch leg openings). Try on dog; adjust elastic or add a small button loop if needed. Tail should pass freely through crotch opening.

Part 2: Halter Top

Chest Band

With MC, ch 42.
Row 1 (RS): hdc in 3rd ch from hook and each ch across (40 hdc). (40 sts ≈ 11.5" base, stretches/ties to 13–15" ✓)
Rows 2–5: ch 1, turn, hdc in each st across (40 hdc).
Band height ≈ 2". Do not fasten off.

Halter Straps & Neck Ties

From end of Row 5: ch 45 (first long tie).
Fasten off.
Rejoin yarn at opposite end of Row 5 with sl st, ch 45 (second long tie). Fasten off.
These wrap up and around neck and tie at nape or with a bow on top of neck.

Optional Front Accent / Bikini “Cups” (intermediate texture)

Mark center 16 sts of chest band.
Row 1: join MC or CC at first marked st, ch 1, hdc in next 16 sts, turn.
Row 2: ch 1, hdc2tog, hdc in next 12, hdc2tog, turn (14 sts).
Row 3: ch 1, hdc2tog, hdc in next 10, hdc2tog, turn (12 sts).
Row 4: ch 1, hdc across (12). Fasten off.
Repeat for a second small triangle on the same 16 sts or offset for double-cup look; sew or surface-crochet lightly to band. (Optional—plain band is fully wearable.)

Side Chest Ties (for under-belly or behind-front-leg security)

Join yarn at each short end of chest band, ch 30–35. Fasten off.
These tie under the chest or gently behind the front legs for stability (leave loose enough for full shoulder movement).

Top Edging (optional)

With CC and smaller hook, sc evenly around all edges of band and along ties for a finished look and slight firmness. Fasten off.

Top Finishing

Weave in ends. Block flat.
To wear: Place band across chest behind front legs. Bring neck ties up and tie comfortably at back of neck (2-finger ease). Secure side ties under body or at withers with a bow. Check that nothing rubs armpits or restricts breathing/gait.

Final Finishing & Care (both pieces)

• Weave in every end with yarn needle, splitting plies for security; trim close.
• Light wet-block: soak in cool water, roll in towel, pat to measurements, dry flat.
• Insert/adjust elastic only after blocking.
• Care: hand or gentle machine wash cold, lay flat to dry.
• Fit check: put both pieces on dog for 5–10 minutes supervised. You should easily slip two fingers under any band or tie. Shorten ties if excess length; lengthen by attaching extra ch if needed.

Custom sizing quick guide

• Larger chest: add 4 hdc to starting ch of top (~1").
• Smaller waist: work one extra decrease rnd on skirt (final ~46 sts).
• Longer mini skirt: add 2–4 even hdc rnds before waist decreases.
