Materials

• Worsted-weight cotton yarn (US weight 4):
  • Color A (Black): 60 yd (55 m)
  • Color B (Red): 25 yd (23 m)
  • Color C (Green): 25 yd (23 m)
• Crochet hook: US H/8 (5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge
• Yarn needle
• Scissors
• Optional: 2 small wooden dowels or sticks (9 inches / 23 cm) and hanging cord

Gauge

14 sc and 16 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in single crochet
Take time to check gauge. Adjust hook size if necessary to obtain gauge.

Notes

• Worked flat in rows from the bottom up.
• The lettering is created with tapestry crochet (carry unused yarn along the WS or cut and rejoin as preferred). Always change color in the last yarn-over of the stitch before the new color.
• Keep carried yarns loose enough so the fabric does not pucker.
• The attached stitch chart shows every stitch and color; the written instructions below tell you when to work the chart and how to handle borders/hanging.
• Weave in ends as you go or at the end on the WS.

How to read the chart:

• Each square = 1 sc.
• Chart is worked in single crochet, reading RS rows (odd-numbered) from right to left and WS rows (even-numbered) from left to right.
• Begin at the bottom-right corner of the chart (Row 1, stitch 1) and work upward.
• Color key: black squares = CA, red squares = CB, green squares = CC (exact key printed on the attached chart).
• When a color change occurs, finish the last stitch of the old color with the new color.
• Stitch-count integration: the chart is exactly 28 stitches wide and 32 rows tall. Work the foundation chain and every row to maintain 28 sc so the chart fits edge-to-edge with no extra plain stitches required on the sides. After Row 32 of the chart, proceed directly to the border.

Color/yarn management: Use CA as the main background. Carry CB and CC only across the short distances needed for the letters (or cut and restart for cleaner WS). Never carry more than two colors at once. Twist yarns when changing to prevent holes.

Pattern Instructions

Main Square

With CA, ch 29.

Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (28 sc)
Turn.

Rows 2–32: Ch 1, sc in each st across, following the Attached Stitch Chart for all color changes (CB and CC). (28 sc)
At the end of Row 32, FO all colors. Weave in ends on WS.

(Inline validation: 28 sts maintained every row; 32 rows × gauge 16 rows/4" = 8" height ✓; 28 sts × gauge 14 sts/4" = 8" width ✓)

Border

Join CA with slip st in any corner st.

Round 1: Ch 1, 3 sc in same corner st, sc in each st across to next corner, *3 sc in corner, sc in each st (or row-end) to next corner; repeat from * twice more, join with slip st to first sc.
(Each side will have 28 sc + 2 extra corner sts = 30 sc per side, plus the corner clusters.)

Round 2 (optional thicker border): Ch 1, sc in each sc around, working 3 sc in each corner center st, join and FO.

Weave in remaining ends. Block gently to 9 × 9 inches if desired, pinning corners square.

Optional Hanging Finish

• Weave a 9-inch dowel through the top row of border stitches.
• Attach a second dowel at the bottom if desired for weight.
• Tie a length of cord or yarn to both ends of the top dowel for hanging.

Finishing

Ensure all ends are secure on the WS. Light steam-block (cotton) if edges curl, taking care not to flatten the lettering texture. Your KILIFI REGIONAL OFFICE WELFARE wall hanging is complete.
