MATERIALS

• Yarn: DMC Petra No. 8 (100% cotton, size 8 crochet thread; approx. 306 yd / 280 m per 10 g ball)
  • Quantity: 3 balls (approx. 700–750 yd / 640–685 m total). Buy 1 extra for edging/security.
  • Suggested color: a soft pastel or white.
• Hook: 2.00 mm (US steel size ~4). Note: template calls this "2.00 m" — interpreted as 2.00 mm, correct for Petra 8.
• Notions: Tapestry needle, 4 stitch markers, scissors, rustproof pins for blocking, optional 2 small buttons if adding a back opening.

GAUGE (CRITICAL — SWATCH REQUIRED)

Because this thread is very fine, gauge is essential.

• In single crochet (yoke): 30 sc x 34 rows = 4 in (10 cm) → 7.5 sc per inch
• In V-stitch mesh (skirt): 6 V-stitches (18 sts) x 12 rows = 4 in (10 cm)

Swatch: Ch 34, work sc for 34 rows. Block, then measure the center 4 in. If you have more stitches per inch, size up your hook; fewer, size down.

CONSTRUCTION OVERVIEW

Worked top-down and seamless:

1. Neckband

No shoulder seaming is required — the yoke is worked in one piece.

PATTERN

STEP 1 — NECKBAND

The neckband must stretch over the toddler's head (needs ~18.5 in / 47 cm stretched; a fine cotton sc band of 84 sts relaxes to ~11 in / 28 cm and stretches sufficiently. For a snug head, add a back button opening — see Options).

1. Ch 84, being careful not to twist, join with sl st to first ch to form a ring.
2. Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around, join with sl st to first sc. (84 sc)
3. Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (84 sc)

✔ Math check: 84 sc ÷ 7.5 sc/in = 11.2 in relaxed circumference.

STEP 2 — YOKE SETUP (Place Raglan Markers)

Divide 84 sts into 4 raglan sections: 2 sleeves and 2 body panels. For a toddler, sleeves are narrower than the body.

• Back: 26 sts
• Left sleeve: 16 sts
• Front: 26 sts
• Right sleeve: 16 sts

✔ Math check: 26 + 16 + 26 + 16 = 84 ✓

Rnd 3 (place markers): Ch 1, sc in each st, placing a marker in the LAST stitch of each of the 4 sections (4 raglan "corner" markers). Join. (84 sc)

The stitch AT each marker is a raglan point; you will increase on either side of these 4 points.

STEP 3 — YOKE INCREASES

You will increase 8 sts per round (2 at each of the 4 raglan points) by working 2sc-in-next into the stitch before AND the stitch after each marked raglan stitch.

Increase Round pattern: Ch 1, *sc to 1 st before marked raglan st, 2sc-in-next st, sc in marked st, 2sc-in-next st; rep from * around all 4 raglan points, sc any remaining sts, join. (+8 sts each round)

Move markers up to stay on the raglan stitches each round.

Work the Increase Round 14 times total.

✔ Math check: 84 + (14 × 8) = 84 + 112 = 196 sts.

Section counts after 14 increase rounds:

• Back: 26 + 28 = 54 sts
• Front: 26 + 28 = 54 sts
• Each sleeve: 16 + 28 = 44 sts

✔ Check: 54 + 54 + 44 + 44 = 196 sts ✓

Yoke depth after this ≈ 5 in (14 rounds ÷ ~34 rnds/4in ≈ 1.65"... to reach 5 in add plain rounds). Work plain sc rounds (no increases) until yoke measures 5 in (12.5 cm) from neckband — approximately 12 additional plain rounds. Stitch count stays at 196.

STEP 4 — DIVIDE FOR BODY AND SLEEVES

You will separate the sleeves from the body and add a few chains at each underarm for ease.

Starting at the back section:

1. Ch 1, sc across 54 back sts.
2. Underarm: ch 6 (skip the 44 left sleeve sts entirely — place these on a holder or waste yarn).
3. Sc across 54 front sts.
4. Underarm: ch 6 (skip the 44 right sleeve sts onto a holder).
5. Join with sl st to first sc.

Body stitch count: 54 + 6 + 54 + 6 = 120 sts.

✔ Math check: 120 sts ÷ 7.5 sc/in = 16 in... too narrow. Correction below.

IMPORTANT CORRECTION for finished chest: To hit the 22 in (56 cm) finished chest, work an increase round immediately after joining the body:

Body Rnd 1 (increase): Ch 1, *sc in 5 sts, 2sc-in-next; rep from * around, adjusting so total reaches 165 sts. Specifically work 45 increases evenly: 120 + 45 = 165 sts.

✔ Math check: 165 sc ÷ 7.5 sc/in = 22 in (56 cm) finished chest ✓

Work 1 more plain sc round on the 165 body sts to settle before the skirt.

STEP 5 — SKIRT (V-Stitch Mesh)

The V-stitch multiple is 3. 165 ÷ 3 = 55 V-stitches. ✓ (No adjustment needed.)

Set-up Rnd: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), work (dc, ch 1, dc) — actually begin V-sts: sl st to space, *sk 2 sts, V-st (dc, ch1, dc) in next st; rep from * around. Join to top of beginning. (55 V-sts)

Skirt Rnd (repeat): Sl st into the ch-1 sp of first V-st, ch 3 (counts as dc), (dc, ch 1, dc)... work V-st in the ch-1 space of each V-st around. Join. (55 V-sts each round)

Repeat the Skirt Rnd until the skirt measures desired length. For 2 yr, work until total length from shoulder is approx 17 in (43 cm) — roughly 24–26 skirt rounds (each round ≈ 0.33 in tall in V-st mesh).

Optional gentle A-line: Every 8th round, work 2 V-sts into 5 evenly spaced ch-1 spaces to add subtle flare (+5 V-sts per shaping round). This keeps the shift silhouette while allowing swing.

STEP 6 — SLEEVE/ARMHOLE EDGING

Toddler summer dress = capped, non-sleeve openings.

1. Return one sleeve's 44 held sts to the hook. Rejoin yarn at the center of the underarm chains.
2. Rnd 1: Sc in each of the 44 sleeve sts, then sc 6 evenly across the 6 underarm chains. (50 sts)
3. Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc2tog around every 8th–9th st to snug the opening: reduce to approx 40 sts. Join.
4. Picot edge: Ch 1, *sc in 2 sts, ch 3, sl st in first ch (picot); rep from * around. Fasten off.

Repeat for second armhole.

STEP 7 — NECKLINE EDGING

1. Rejoin yarn at neckband edge.
2. Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each of the 84 neckband sts around. Join.
3. Picot Rnd: Ch 1, *sc in 2 sts, ch 3, sl st in first ch; rep from * around. Fasten off.

STEP 8 — HEM EDGING

1. At the skirt lower edge, rejoin yarn in any ch-1 space.
2. Shell edge: *5 dc in ch-1 sp of next V-st, sc in ch-1 sp of following V-st; rep from * around. Join, fasten off.

This delicate shell hem complements the V-stitch and adds a touch of weight to help the fabric hang.

FINISHING

Blocking (Essential for Lace)

Wet-block: soak the finished dress in cool water, gently squeeze out excess (do not wring), lay flat on towels, and pin to open the V-stitch mesh and true up the yoke. Pin the neckline and hem to measurement. Allow to dry fully. Blocking dramatically improves the drape of fine cotton.

Weaving Ends

Weave all ends securely into the wrong side using a tapestry needle, splitting the plied cotton where possible for an invisible, durable finish. Trim close.

OPTIONS & CUSTOMIZATION

Back Button Opening (recommended for small head openings): Instead of joining the neckband into a ring, work the yoke flat back and forth to the armhole divide, leaving a center-back opening. Add 2 ch-2 button loops on one edge and sew 2 small buttons opposite. This guarantees easy dressing.

Length Customization:

• Mini/shorter: work fewer skirt rounds (stop at ~15 in total).
• Longer: add skirt rounds in multiples; each round adds ~0.33 in (0.85 cm).

Adding Sleeves: For short puff sleeves, work the held 44 sleeve sts in V-st or sc rounds for 1–1.5 in, then finish with a picot edge instead of closing the armhole.

Ease Adjustment: For a slimmer fit, reduce the Body Rnd 1 increases (e.g., +30 instead of +45 for a 20 in chest). For roomier, add more — keep the final body count a multiple of 3 for the V-stitch.

FINAL MATH SUMMARY (Verification)

• Neckband: 84 sc = 11.2 in relaxed (stretches over head; button option provided). ✓
