Little Tide Ombré Ripple Baby Blanket

A funky chevron wave for a new baby boy. Deep navy runs through teal, turquoise, and aqua into sky and ice—an ocean ombré that makes the ripples read as current. Intermediate dc ripple, US terms, worsted weight. Sized for newborn through about 12 months (stroller, bassinet, tummy time, car seat). No fringe, no beads, no buttons.

Finished measurements

Approximately 30 × 38 inches (76 × 96.5 cm) after light blocking, including border.

Body before border: approximately 27 × 36 inches (68.5 × 91.5 cm).

Materials

Yarn: Worsted weight (medium 4), machine-washable acrylic or superwash wool/cotton blend.

Main ombré (6 solids):

Total approximately 1,350 yd (1,235 m).

Hook: US H-8 / 5 mm (body and border). Optional US G-6 / 4 mm for a firmer final border round.

Notions: 8 stitch markers, yarn needle, scissors.

Gauge

14 dc and 8 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in ripple pattern.

One chevron (peak center to next peak center) ≈ 3¾ inches (9.5 cm).

Swatch: Ch 30 and work the ripple for 8 rows (3 peaks). Measure a peak-to-peak repeat. Change hook to match gauge; this size is written for the H-8 gauge above.

Pattern notes

• Blanket is worked flat in turned rows, beginning at the navy (dark) end.
• Ch 3 at the start of ripple rows is a turning chain only. It does not count as a stitch and is never worked into.
• Stitch count is 94 dc on every ripple row. Count at the end of Row 1 and spot-check after color changes.
• Place a marker in the center dc of each 3-dc peak as you make it. Move the markers up every row. The next row’s 3 dc are always worked in those marked stitches.
• Color changes: on the last yarn-over of the last dc of the row, pull through the new color. Cut the old color, leaving a 6-inch (15 cm) tail. Weave tails in immediately or as you go—do not leave them loose in a baby blanket.
• Do not carry unused colors across the row.

Increase and decrease placement

Each chevron is stitch-neutral:

• Increase (peak): 3 dc in the marked center stitch of the previous peak (net +2).
• Decrease (valley): skip 2 dc at the base of the V (net −2).
• 8 peaks × 3 dc = 24. 7 valleys × 10 slope dc (5 + 5) = 70. 24 + 70 = 94 dc ✓

If you ever have 93 or 95, you missed a peak center or a skip-2. Rip back that row; do not “ease” it.

Baby safety

Weave every end through at least 2–3 inches (5–8 cm) of work, then snip. No fringe, pompoms, buttons, or beads. Acrylic or superwash recommended for frequent washing.

Color sequence (main ombré)

Work the number of rows listed, then change color.

8 + 10 + 14 + 16 + 14 + 10 = 72 rows ✓

Stripe options

1 — Written ombré (use this): six-shade tide, dark at the cast-on edge, foam at the finish.

2 — Two-color funk: A and C only, 4 rows each, ending with A so the border matches. 72 rows = 9 full 8-row pairs.

3 — One cake: one worsted ombré/gradient cake (or two stacked cakes) totaling at least 1,100 yd (1,005 m). Work 72 rows in pattern, then border with a solid navy leftover or the darkest section of the cake. Let the yarn make the gradient; do not cut at color shifts.

Blanket

With A and H-8 / 5 mm, ch 95.

Row 1 (RS): 3 dc in 4th ch from hook (3 skipped ch are turning ch only and do not count as a st), dc in next 5 ch, sk next 2 ch, dc in next 5 ch, *3 dc in next ch, dc in next 5 ch, sk next 2 ch, dc in next 5 ch; rep from * to last ch, 3 dc in last ch. Turn.

[Worked into 92 ch (95 − 3 = 92 ✓). 8 peaks, 7 valleys. 94 dc ✓. Mark the center dc of each 3-dc group.]

Row 2: Ch 3 (turning ch only, does not count as a st), sk first dc, 3 dc in next dc (peak center), *dc in next 5 dc, sk next 2 dc, dc in next 5 dc, 3 dc in next dc; rep from * until 1 dc remains, sk last dc. Turn.

Rows 3–8: Rep Row 2. Change to B at the end of Row 8.

Rows 9–18: With B, rep Row 2. Change to C at the end of Row 18.

Rows 19–32: With C, rep Row 2. Change to D at the end of Row 32.

Rows 33–48: With D, rep Row 2. Change to E at the end of Row 48.

Rows 49–62: With E, rep Row 2. Change to F at the end of Row 62.

Rows 63–72: With F, rep Row 2. Fasten off F at the end of Row 72.

Border

Join A with sl st in any corner (the first or last st of Row 72 is a good start). Work with RS facing. Move smoothly; do not work into turning chains along the sides.

Round 1 (sc, even the waves): Ch 1.

• Along the top (Row 72): Sc in each dc across, working 2 sc in each marked peak center and skipping 1 dc at each valley. [94 + 8 peaks − 7 valleys = 95 sc along this edge ✓.]
• Corner: 3 sc in the corner st.
• Along the first side: 2 sc in each row-end (dc rows are two chains high). [72 rows × 2 = 144 sc ✓.]
• Corner: 3 sc in the corner st.
• Along the bottom (foundation): Sc in each remaining loop of the starting chain, working 2 sc in each peak chain (the chains that held 3 dc) and skipping the 2 unused valley chains. 3 sc in the next corner.
• Along the second side: 2 sc in each row-end (144 sc). 3 sc in the last corner.

Join with sl st to first sc.

Round 2: Ch 2 (does not count as hdc), hdc in each sc around, working 3 hdc in the center sc of each 3-sc corner. Join to first hdc.

Optional funky finish (intermediate): With C (turquoise) and G-6 / 4 mm, work 1 round of rev sc (crab stitch) in each sc. Do not add extra stitches at corners beyond 2 rev sc in the corner sc. Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in every remaining tail on the WS, splitting the plies and running each end in two directions. Lightly block: for acrylic, hover-steam (do not crush the ripples); for superwash wool or cotton, wet-block to 30 × 38 inches (76 × 96.5 cm) and pin the border straight, allowing the top and bottom chevrons to keep a gentle wave inside the frame.

Machine wash gentle, cool; tumble low or lay flat.

To resize

• Wider (toddler crib, ~36 inches / 91.5 cm body): Add 2 peaks. Extra foundation = 26 ch. New starting ch = 121. Stitch count becomes 120 dc. (Each added peak + valley unit uses 13 foundation ch and adds 13 dc: 5 + 2 + 5 + 1 = 13 ✓.)
• Throw (template 50 × 60 inches / 127 × 152 cm): At this gauge you need about 13 peaks (ch 186) and about 120 rows, plus extra yarn (~2,400 yd / 2,195 m). Keep the same ombré proportions (scale the row bands).
