London Moquette Ribbed Beanie

A cozy beginner-friendly beanie worked in the round from the brim up. A stretchy k2p2 rib brim flows into a stockinette band featuring a London Underground–inspired moquette motif from the attached stitch chart, then simple crown decreases. Worsted weight keeps it quick and warm. Optional pompom.

Yarn

Worsted weight yarn (CYC 4), approximately:

• MC (Main Color — e.g. deep navy, charcoal, or burgundy): 90 yd (82 m)
• CC1 (Contrast — e.g. cream, gold, or soft green): 40 yd (37 m)
• CC2 (optional second contrast — e.g. rust, sky, or mustard): 25 yd (23 m)

Sample inspiration: classic Tube moquette palettes (navy/cream/red, green/cream/black, etc.). Solid or heathered wool or wool-blend worsted recommended for warmth and stitch definition.

Needles

• US 6 (4 mm) 16" (40 cm) circular needle for rib brim
• US 7 (4.5 mm) 16" (40 cm) circular needle for body
• US 7 (4.5 mm) DPNs or magic-loop needle for crown
• Or sizes needed to obtain gauge

Gauge

20 sts and 28 rnds = 4" (10 cm) in stockinette stitch on larger needles, worked in the round, after blocking. Important: Also swatch a few repeats of the attached moquette chart in colorwork. Stranded fabric is often denser; change needle size if needed so charted fabric matches target circumference. Measure gauge over the colorwork motif if it differs from plain St st.

Notes

• Hat is worked seamless in the round from the brim to the crown.
• Join to work in the round being careful not to twist; pm for BOR.
• Ribbing is k2, p2.
• Moquette section uses stranded colorwork (Fair Isle style) following the attached stitch chart. Carry unused yarn loosely across the wrong side. Catch (trap) floats every 3–4 stitches so they do not snag.
• Keep floats even and relaxed so the hat remains stretchy; do not pull CC strands tight.
• Read chart rounds from right to left on every round (in the round).
• When only one color is used on a round, you may drop the other color and resume when needed, or carry it up the inside sparingly.
• Crown decreases are worked in MC only unless you prefer to continue a solid CC.
• Height is easy to customize: add or remove plain MC rnds before or after the chart band.

Where to find it: The chart appears in the attached stitch-chart panel / figure that accompanies this pattern document (typically placed after the Notes or beside the Body instructions in your pattern package).

How to read the chart (knitting, in the round):

• Each square = 1 stitch; each chart row = 1 round.
• Work every chart round from right to left.
• Colors are indicated by the chart key (MC, CC1, CC2, etc.). Change colors as shown; strand the unused yarn on the wrong side.
• Repeat the chart width across the entire round. Your cast-on count is a multiple of the chart’s stitch repeat so the motif joins cleanly at BOR.
• Work chart rounds from bottom to top (or in the order numbered on the attached chart).
• If the attached chart shows a multi-round repeat, work the full height of the motif once (or repeat vertically if the chart and your desired hat height allow—see Body).

Color / yarn management & stitch-count integration:

• Confirm the attached chart’s stitch-repeat width (for example 8, 10, or 12 sts). Cast-on 96 sts works when the repeat divides 96 evenly (96 ÷ 8 = 12 repeats). If your attached chart uses a different repeat, CO the nearest multiple of both 4 (for k2p2 rib) and the chart repeat, and use that count through Body; crown decrease spacing below assumes 96 sts—adjust decrease interval proportionally if you changed CO.
• Body is worked on 96 sts (or your adjusted multiple). No stitch-count change through the chart band: chart rnds are knit-only colorwork (no increases/decreases inside the motif).
• Float tension affects circumference; block gently and try on before crown if unsure.
• Weave in color ends securely on the wrong side after the band, or carry MC continuously if the chart allows.

Pattern Instructions

Brim

With smaller needle and MC, CO 96 sts using a stretchy cast-on (long-tail or similar). Pm and join to work in the round, being careful not to twist.

Rib rnd: *K2, p2; repeat from * to end of rnd.

Repeat Rib rnd until brim measures 1½" (4 cm) from CO edge, or desired brim depth. (96 sts)

Body

Change to larger needle. With MC, knit 2 rnds.

Begin moquette chart: Join CCs as needed. Work the attached moquette stitch chart in stranded colorwork across all 96 sts (whole number of chart repeats). Continue until all chart rounds are complete once, or as directed on the attached chart for one full motif height. (96 sts — no change ✓)

Break CCs, leaving tails to weave later. With MC only, knit every rnd until piece measures about 6½" (16.5 cm) from CO edge (including brim), or about 2–2½" (5–6.5 cm) less than total desired height before crown.
(Inline check: body still 96 sts ✓)

Crown

Switch to DPNs or magic loop when needed. Continue with MC.

Rnd 1 (decrease): *K10, k2tog; repeat from * to end. (8 sts decreased → 96 − 8 = 88 sts ✓)

Rnd 2: Knit.

Rnd 3: *K9, k2tog; repeat from * to end. (88 − 8 = 80 sts ✓)

Rnd 4: Knit.

Rnd 5: *K8, k2tog; repeat from * to end. (80 − 8 = 72 sts ✓)

Rnd 6: Knit.

Rnd 7: *K7, k2tog; repeat from * to end. (72 − 8 = 64 sts ✓)

Rnd 8: Knit.

Rnd 9: *K6, k2tog; repeat from * to end. (64 − 8 = 56 sts ✓)

Rnd 10: Knit.

Rnd 11: *K5, k2tog; repeat from * to end. (56 − 8 = 48 sts ✓)

Rnd 12: Knit.

Rnd 13: *K4, k2tog; repeat from * to end. (48 − 8 = 40 sts ✓)

Rnd 14: *K3, k2tog; repeat from * to end. (40 − 8 = 32 sts ✓)

Finishing

Cut yarn, leaving an 8" (20 cm) tail. Thread tail through remaining 8 sts, pull tight to close, and secure on wrong side.

Weave in all ends neatly on the wrong side, taking care to secure colorwork tails without tightening the fabric. Block lightly to measurements if desired (steam or wet-block; avoid crushing rib elasticity).

Optional: Attach a pompom to the crown securely.
