Mini Dinosaur Hairbow Set

Easy Crochet Pattern – Simple Shapes

A beginner-friendly set of three mini dinosaur hairbows. Each bow features a tiny amigurumi dinosaur (approx. 2.5" / 6.5 cm long) sewn onto a classic double-loop bow and finished with an alligator hair clip. Uses only single crochet and basic increases/decreases.

Finished Size (one bow): Bow 3" wide × 1.5" tall (7.5 × 4 cm); dinosaur 2.5" long × 1.5" tall (6.5 × 4 cm).

Materials

• Worsted weight (4) acrylic or cotton yarn:
  • Main color (MC) for body: approx. 20 yd / 18 m per dino (suggest greens, blues, or purples)
  • Contrast color (CC) for spikes/belly: approx. 5 yd / 5 m per dino
  • Bow color (BC): approx. 15 yd / 14 m per bow (can match MC or use coordinating solid/print)
• Small amount of black embroidery floss or yarn for eyes/nostrils
• US E-4 (3.5 mm) crochet hook (or size needed to obtain gauge; go down 1–2 sizes from yarn label for tight fabric)
• Polyester fiberfill (very small amount)
• Yarn needle
• Stitch marker
• 3 alligator hair clips (1.5–2" / 4–5 cm long)
• Optional: hot glue or fabric glue for extra clip security; pins for assembly
• Scissors

Yarn amounts are for the full set of 3 bows.

Gauge

5 sc and 5 rnds = 1" (2.5 cm) in continuous sc rounds with E-4 (3.5 mm) hook.
Gauge is important for size and density—tight stitches prevent stuffing show-through. Adjust hook if needed.

Notes

• Dinosaurs are worked in continuous spirals unless stated. Do not join rnds; mark first st of each rnd with stitch marker.
• Work tightly for clean amigurumi look.
• Stuff very lightly—hairbows should stay lightweight and not flop.
• Bow is worked flat in rows.
• Make 3 complete bows for the set (vary MC/CC colors for variety: e.g., green dino/yellow spikes, blue dino/orange spikes, purple dino/pink spikes).
• Invisible decrease: insert hook through front loops only of next 2 sts, yarn over, pull through both, yarn over, pull through 2 loops.
• All measurements imperial first; metric approximate.

Body (oval – MC)
Rnd 1: Ch 5. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2 ch, 3 sc in last ch. Working on opposite side of ch: sc in next 2 ch, 2 sc in last ch. [10]

Spikes (make 5 – CC, worked flat)
Row 1: Ch 4. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in last ch. [3 sts]

(Make spikes slightly varied in size if desired by changing starting ch to 3 or 5 for set interest; keep counts consistent within one dino.)

Bow Base (make 3 – BC)

Main Loops

Rectangle measures approx. 4" × 1.25".

Assembly (per hairbow)

1. Dinosaur construction

   • Sew snout to front of head (centered on Rnds 3–4).
   • With black floss, embroider 2 small straight-stitch or French-knot eyes above snout and 2 tiny nostrils on snout tip.
   • Sew head to one short end of body (use head’s closing tail; angle slightly upward).
   • Sew tail to opposite end of body, slightly tapered.
   • Sew 2 legs to each long side of body underside, near head and near tail (space evenly; legs point downward/out).
   • Pin 5 spikes in a row along top centerline of body + head; sew securely with CC tails (base of each triangle flat against body).
   • Optional: sew belly patch to body underside between legs.
   • Weave in all ends. Finished dino lies relatively flat for wearability.

2. Bow shaping

   • Take main loops rectangle. Pinch center tightly to form two equal loops (classic bow).
   • Using long tail, wrap tightly around the pinched center 8–10 times to secure shape. Do not cut tail yet.
   • Place center wrap strip over the wrapped middle (right side out); sew or wrap its tails to back to cover the cinch neatly. Secure all tails on back.

3. Join dino to bow

   • Center dinosaur on front of bow (body horizontal, head to one side).
   • Sew dino securely through bow layers with matching yarn, catching body and a few leg/spike bases so it does not flop. Knot on back.

4. Attach alligator clip

   • Open clip. Position on back of bow so hinge sits at center wrap and teeth face down (wearable direction).
   • Sew clip firmly to bow back through the metal holes or around the clip arms, going through all bow layers multiple times. Knot securely.
   • Optional: add small dab of hot glue under clip for extra hold (test yarn first).
   • Weave in any remaining ends.

Repeat for remaining two bows with different color combinations to complete the set.

Finishing

• Steam-block bows lightly if needed (hover iron; do not crush dinos).
• Check all embroidered features and spike attachments.
• Trim stray fibers.
• Store flat or hang by clips.

Customization Tips

• Larger bow: start with ch 28 and 8 rows for main loops.
• No-sew spikes: surface-sl-st small triangles after body is closed.
• Keychain version: omit bow/clip; add jump ring through dino body.
• Safety: These are hair accessories, not toys for children under 3 (small parts/clip).
