# Mosaic Owl Crochet Blanket
### A Beginner-Friendly Overlay Mosaic Throw

Bold, graphic owls appear as if by magic in this two-color mosaic blanket. Despite its complex look, mosaic crochet only ever uses **one color per row**, so beginners can relax — you never juggle two yarns at once. You simply change color at the end of each row and follow the attached chart.

- **Yarn:** Worsted weight (Medium / #4), smooth plied yarn recommended for stitch definition.
  - **Color A (Background):** approximately 900–1000 yds
  - **Color B (Owls):** approximately 700–800 yds
  - *Total: ~1600–1800 yds*, consistent with worsted-weight throw estimates.
  - Suggested pairing: a warm cream (A) with a deep teal or charcoal (B) for high contrast — mosaic relies on contrast to read clearly.
- **Hook:** US I/9 (5.5 mm)
- **Notions:**
  - Stitch markers (at least 6)
  - Yarn needle for weaving ends
  - Scissors
  - Blocking mat and rust-proof pins

## Gauge
- **15 sc = 4 in (10 cm)** in mosaic sc pattern → 3.75 sts per inch
- **16 mosaic rows = 4 in** → ~4 rows per inch
- **Make a 6×6 in swatch** in mosaic pattern (chain a multiple of any small motif) and block before measuring. Mosaic fabric is dense and firm; if too stiff, go up to a 6.0 mm hook.

**Gauge math check:** 180 sts ÷ 3.75 sts/in = 48 in body + 1 in border each side = **50 in wide.** ✓
240 rows ÷ 4 rows/in = **60 in long.** ✓

## Stitches & Abbreviations (US Terms)
- **ch** = chain
- **sc** = single crochet
- **dc** = double crochet
- **BLO** = back loop only
- **sk** = skip
- **RS / WS** = right side / wrong side
- **Mosaic dc (mdc)** = a "drop stitch": work a dc into the indicated stitch **2 rows below**, in front of the current-row stitch, then skip the stitch directly behind it on the current row.
- **rep** = repeat

## The Mosaic Technique (Read First!)
This is **inset (overlay) mosaic** worked in rows. The core rules:

1. Every row is worked in **ONE color only.**
2. You work two rows per color: change color at the **end** of each right-side and wrong-side pair as the chart directs (this pattern changes color **every row** — a new color joins at the start of each row).
3. Most stitches are **sc worked in BLO** (back loop only). This leaves the front loops as horizontal ridges and creates the "channels" mosaic is known for.
4. **Colored motif stitches** are made with **mdc drop stitches** that reach down 2 rows into the previous same-color row, pulling that color up to the surface.
5. **Do NOT turn** in the middle of a color change incorrectly — after finishing a row, you fasten off or drop that color at the row's end and rejoin the alternate color at the **same end** to begin the next row. (This blanket uses the "cut or carry up the side" method — see Color Management.)

- **Placement:** The attached chart panel appears **immediately after this pattern document**, labeled *"Mosaic Owl Chart — 60 sts × 80 rows."* It shows one complete owl motif block.
- **How to read it (crochet, mosaic):**
  - Read the chart **from the bottom up.** Row 1 is the bottom row.
  - **Right-side (odd) rows are read right → left**; **wrong-side (even) rows are read left → right.** This zig-zag mirrors how your work is oriented after turning.
  - Each **filled square = a stitch worked in that row's active color.** Where the chart shows the *opposite* color, that square is a **mdc drop stitch** reaching into the matching-color row 2 below; the plain squares are **sc in BLO** in the current color.
  - The two chart colors correspond to **Color A (background)** and **Color B (owls).**
- **Color management around the chart:** Only one color is ever in your hand. When the chart's active row is Color A, all "B" squares in that row are simply skipped-behind drop stitches formed later — you only ever crochet the **current color's** squares as sc and reach down for the drop stitches shown.
- **Stitch-count integration math:**
  - Chart width = **60 sts.** This blanket uses **3 horizontal repeats: 60 × 3 = 180 sts.**
  - Vertical: chart = **80 rows** = one owl band; work the **80-row chart 3 times = 240 rows** for full length.
  - **Edge/border sts are added separately** during the border rounds (below) — they are NOT part of the 180 chart stitches. ✓

## Layout
**Allover mosaic motif**, worked in three side-by-side owl columns, stacked three owls tall — a 3×3 grid of owls across the blanket body.

## Pattern Instructions

### Foundation
With **Color A**, ch **181**.
- **Math:** 180 pattern sts + 1 turning ch = 181. ✓ (180 = 60-st chart × 3 repeats.)

**Set-up Row (WS):** Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across. **(180 sc)**
Do not turn yet — proceed to establish mosaic.

**Row 1 (RS):** Change to **Color B** at the end/beginning as directed. Ch 1, sc in BLO of each st across following **Chart Row 1**, working **mdc drop stitches** where the chart shows Color B against the A background. **(180 sts)** Turn.

**Row 2 (WS):** With **Color A**, ch 1, work Chart Row 2 across in sc BLO with mdc drop stitches where indicated. **(180 sts)** Turn.

**Rows 3–80:** Continue in established mosaic, following the attached chart **row by row**, changing color every row and reading RS rows right-to-left, WS rows left-to-right. Always maintain **180 sts** per row.

**Rows 81–160:** Repeat Chart Rows 1–80 (second owl band).
**Rows 161–240:** Repeat Chart Rows 1–80 (third owl band).

**End:** After Row 240, fasten off Color B, continue with Color A for border.
- **Total rows:** 80 × 3 = **240 rows** = 60 in. ✓

## Color Management
- **Carrying up the side:** Because color changes every row, do **not** cut each time. Carry the unused color up the **left edge**, catching it every 2 rows to avoid long loose loops. This creates a tidy edge later hidden by the border.
- Always join a new color with the final yarn-over of the last stitch of the previous row for a clean transition.
- Keep tension even on carried strands — too tight puckers the edge.

## Border
Worked in the round with **Color A**, RS facing.

**Round 1:** Join in any corner. Ch 1, sc evenly around entire blanket, working **3 sc in each corner**. Along the sides, work approximately **3 sc for every 4 rows** to keep edges flat. Join with sl st.
- **Edge math:** ~1 in of border sc + Round-2 shell ≈ 1 in each side → adds ~2 in to width (48 → 50 in) and length (58 → 60 in). ✓

**Round 2 (Shell edging):** Ch 1, *sk 1 st, 5 dc in next st (shell), sk 1 st, sc in next st*; rep around, adjusting at corners to keep shells even. Join with sl st. Fasten off.

**Round 3 (optional picot):** Ch 1, sc in each st, adding a **ch-3 picot** at the peak of each shell for a decorative finish. Fasten off.

## Finishing

### Weaving Ends
Weave in all ends securely along same-color stitches on the WS with a yarn needle. Trim.

### Blocking (Essential)
Mosaic fabric benefits greatly from blocking to relax the drop stitches and square the corners.
- **Wet block:** Soak in cool water with a little wool wash, roll in a towel to remove excess water, then **pin to 50×60 in** on blocking mats, squaring all corners. Let dry fully flat.
- **Steam block (alternative):** Hover a steam iron just above the surface — **do not press** and crush the ridged texture. Gently pat into shape.

## Sizing Notes
- **Smaller (baby, ~34×40 in):** Work **2 chart repeats wide** (ch 121 → 120 sts) and **2 bands tall** (160 rows).
- **Larger (queen, ~66×80 in):** Work **4 chart repeats wide** (ch 241 → 240 sts) and **4 bands tall** (320 rows). Increase yarn proportionally (~+35% per added repeat direction).
- Always keep the chain a **multiple of 60, plus 1** turning chain.

## Beginner Success Tips
1. **Count every row** back to 180 before changing color.
2. **Mark repeats:** Place a stitch marker every 60 sts (at each owl boundary) to catch miscounts early.
