Textured Diamond Swatch — Written-to-Chart Conversion

A beginner-friendly knit/purl texture chart for your personal swatch dictionary.

This document converts your written textured pattern into a standard color-free (symbol) knitting chart. The chart is drawn using the universal convention: each symbol shows how the stitch looks on the Right Side (RS) of the fabric. This means WS rows have been "translated" for you — you don't chart what your hands do on the WS, you chart how the stitch faces on the RS.

Materials

• Yarn: Worsted weight (Medium / #4), any fiber — approx. 25–30 yds for a single swatch
• Needles: US 7 / 4.5 mm (or size to match your gauge)
• Notions: Tapestry needle, scissors

Gauge

• Approx. 20 sts × 28 rows = 4" (10 cm) in stockinette, worsted weight.
• Gauge is not critical for a reference swatch, but note your own gauge in your dictionary for future comparison.

Finished Measurements

• Cast on 21 stitches; worked over 26 rows.
• Approx. 4.25" (10.8 cm) wide × 3.5" (9 cm) tall at the listed gauge.

Abbreviations

• RS – right side
• WS – wrong side
• k – knit
• p – purl

Pattern Notes

• Cast on: 21 stitches. Every row is 21 stitches (no shaping). (21 sts throughout ✓)
• Row structure: Rows 1–6 form the texture repeat and are worked 4 times total (Rows 1–24), followed by Row 25 (a repeat of Row 1), then Row 26 bind-off.
• Reading the chart:
  • RS rows (odd rows: 1, 3, 5, …) are read right → left.
  • WS rows (even rows: 2, 4, 6, …) are read left → right.
  • Row numbers are printed on the side where each row begins: RS row numbers on the right, WS row numbers on the left.
• Symbol convention: Symbols represent the RS appearance. On WS rows the symbols have already been translated, so simply "knit the knits and purl the purls as they present themselves" — or follow the row-by-row written key below if you prefer.

Repeat box: Work charted Rows 1–6 a total of 4 times (= 24 rows), then work Row 25 once, then bind off (Row 26).

Alternate Textured Chart (identical motif, "translated WS" view for hands)

If you prefer a chart that shows exactly what your hands do on each row (not the RS-face convention), use this version. Here, on WS rows a ☐ = knit and a ● = purl as worked. This is handy at the needles but is non-standard — keep it labeled clearly in your dictionary.

Tips for Charting Your Own Swatches

1. Always note direction arrows — RS right-to-left, WS left-to-right. This prevents mirror-image errors.
2. Use the RS-face convention (the main chart) for anything you'll share or file long-term; it's the industry standard and lets you "read your knitting."
3. Count every charted row back to 21 before trusting it — a single mis-drawn cell shifts the whole motif.
4. Label the repeat with a bold box or bracket so future-you knows Rows 1–6 repeat 4×.

Finishing

Weave in ends with a tapestry needle. Block gently to open up the texture. Pin the swatch into your dictionary with a note of your yarn, needle size, and measured gauge for future reference.
