Corner-to-Corner Textured Throw

A bias-knit (corner-to-corner) throw in worsted weight. Garter ridges and seed stitch travel on the diagonal from the cast-on corner to the bind-off corner. A mitered seed-stitch border frames the rectangle. Reversible, and it lies flat.

Skill level: Intermediate (C2C shaping by measurement, seed stitch on a changing count, picked-up mitered border).

Finished measurements

50 in (127 cm) wide × 60 in (152.5 cm) long, including a 2 in (5 cm) border, after blocking.

Interior C2C rectangle: 46 in (117 cm) × 56 in (142 cm).

Materials

Yarn: Worsted weight (CYC 4), 2200 yd (2010 m). Seed stitch is denser than stockinette; an extra skein is cheap insurance.

One-color version uses the full amount. Optional contrast border: 2000 yd (1830 m) main color (MC) + 200 yd (183 m) contrast color (CC).

Needles: US 8 / 5 mm circular, 40 in (100 cm) or longer (work back and forth for the body; the length holds the border). Spare US 8 / 5 mm circular of the same length is helpful for picking up the border.

Notions: Tape measure, tapestry needle, 4 stitch markers (2 locking markers useful in the rectangle section), scissors.

Gauge

18 stitches and 36 rows = 4 in (10 cm) in garter stitch, blocked.

Seed stitch is about 18 stitches and 32 rows = 4 in (10 cm).

C2C size is driven by side-edge measurements, not by hitting an exact stitch count. Swatch, block the swatch, and match stitch gauge as closely as you can; then measure the blanket as you go.

Abbreviations (US)

Pattern notes

• The blanket is a right triangle that becomes a rectangle, then tapers to the opposite corner. You always shape at the beginning of the row, then work the rest of the row in texture.
• Trust the tape measure. Approximate stitch counts are checkpoints only. If your count is off by a few stitches when the side hits the target length, keep going; do not add or drop stitches to force the number.
• Texture bands run parallel to the needle (the hypotenuse), so they read as diagonal stripes on the finished throw. Do not restart the texture when you change shaping sections.
• Use a circular needle but do not join; the body is worked flat.
• Garter and seed are both reversible and do not curl.

Stitch guide

Shaping stitches (always the first 2 stitches of the row):

• Increase row: K1, kfb, then work in current texture to end. (+1 st)
• Decrease row: K1, k2tog, then work in current texture to end. (−1 st)

Texture repeat (16 rows; begin on Row 1 of the Increase Section and run it continuously):

Garter band (Rows 1–8): Knit every stitch after the 2 shaping stitches.

Seed band (Rows 9–16):

• Row 9 only (setup): After the 2 shaping stitches, work *k1, p1; repeat from * to end, ending k1 if an odd number of stitches remain, or p1 if even.
• Rows 10–16: After the 2 shaping stitches, knit the purl stitches and purl the knit stitches as they face you (true seed).

Repeat Rows 1–16 for the entire body.

Body

Increase section (first corner → 46 in triangle)

CO 4 sts.

Work Increase rows every row, continuing the 16-row texture, until either side edge measures 46 in (117 cm) from the cast-on corner up to the needle.

Checkpoint: You will have approximately 293 sts (4 + 289 increases = 293 ✓). If the side already measures 46 in (117 cm) at a nearby count, stop there.

You now have a right triangle with 46 in (117 cm) legs.

Rectangle section (grow the length to 56 in)

Place a locking marker on the side edge where you are about to begin the next row. That marked edge is a long side.

Work as follows, still in the 16-row texture:

• Row A (increase): K1, kfb, work in texture to end. (+1 st)
• Row B (decrease): K1, k2tog, work in texture to end. (−1 st)

Repeat Rows A–B until the longer side edge measures 56 in (142 cm).

Stitch count stays at approximately 293 (inc 1 + dec 1 = 0 net ✓). The unmarked 46 in (117 cm) sides hold their length; only the marked pair grows.

Decrease section (taper to the opposite corner)

Work Decrease rows every row, continuing the 16-row texture, until 4 sts remain.

Checkpoint: From ~293 sts, 289 decreases → 293 − 289 = 4 sts ✓.

Next row: K1, k2tog, k1. 3 sts remain.

BO remaining sts knitwise. Fasten off. This bind-off is the corner opposite the cast-on.

Decorative border

The four sides of a C2C rectangle are all selvedges (cast-on and bind-off are only the two corners). A mitered seed border is picked up all the way around.

With RS facing, MC or CC, and the circular needle, beginning at any corner:

Pick up and knit at 18 sts per 4 in (10 cm) — about 4.5 sts per inch, or 1 st per garter ridge along garter stretches, and 3 sts per 4 rows along seed stretches — plus treat 1 st at each of the 4 corners as a corner stitch.

Targets:

• Each 46 in (117 cm) side ≈ 207 sts (46 × 4.5 = 207 ✓)
• Each 56 in (142 cm) side ≈ 252 sts (56 × 4.5 = 252 ✓)
• Total ≈ 918 sts (207 × 2 + 252 × 2 = 918 ✓)

Pm in each of the 4 corner stitches. Do not worry if you are a few stitches off; adjust on the first round so the border lies flat. Join to work in the round.

Rnd 1: *Work in seed (*k1, p1; repeat from *) to marked corner st, k the corner st; repeat from * around.

Rnd 2 (miter): *Work in seed (knit the purls, purl the knits) to 1 st before marked corner st, M1R, k1 (corner), sm, M1L; repeat from * around. (+8 sts)

Rnd 3: Work in seed around, working each M1 into pattern (knit the purls, purl the knits). Knit each corner st.

Repeat Rnds 2–3 seven more times — 8 miter rounds and 16 rounds total.

16 rounds at seed gauge (32 rows = 4 in) = 2 in (5 cm) ✓.
8 miter rounds × 8 sts = 64 sts added; 918 + 64 = 982 sts ✓.

BO in seed, loosely (use a larger needle if the edge draws in).

Finishing

Weave in ends on the WS.

Block. Soak in lukewarm water with a little wool wash, press out water in a towel, and pin to a true rectangle 50 × 60 in (127 × 152.5 cm). Square the four corners and straighten the sides. Bias fabric will try to become a diamond if you skip this step. Dry completely before unpinning.

Optional variations

• Striped bands: Change color at the start of every 16-row texture repeat. Carry colors up the selvedge or cut and weave in. Same yardage split across colors.
• Square throw: Skip the Rectangle Section. When both side edges measure 46 in (117 cm), go straight to the Decrease Section. Finished size about 50 × 50 in (127 × 127 cm) including border. Yarn ≈ 1850 yd (1690 m).
• No contrast: Work border in MC.
