Wine Glass Carrier — "Sip & Stroll"

A charming, beginner-friendly crochet carrier for a single wine glass. A solid single-crochet cup cradles the base, an airy mesh body shows off your glass, a drawstring keeps it secure, and a long shoulder strap leaves your hands free. Perfect for picnics, patios, and porch parties.

Gauge

16 sc = 4 in (10 cm); 4 sc = 1 in. Gauge is not critical for fit but affects finished size and how snugly the glass sits. Work a small swatch if you want to match measurements exactly.

Construction Notes

Worked seamlessly in continuous spiral rounds from the base up. The bottom is a solid sc cup to protect and support the glass; the upper body switches to a simple ch-1 mesh for stretch and visibility. Place a stitch marker in the first st of each round and move it up as you go.

PATTERN

Base (solid cup)

Round 1: Make a magic ring. Work 8 sc into the ring. Pull tight. (8 sts)

Round 2: 2 sc in each st around. (8 + 8 = 16 sts ✓)

Round 3: 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around. (8 inc → 16 + 8 = 24 sts ✓)

Round 4: 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around. (8 inc → 24 + 8 = 32 sts ✓)

Round 5: 1 sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around. (8 inc → 32 + 8 = 40 sts ✓)

Check: 40 sc ÷ 4 sts/in = 10 in circumference → diameter ≈ 10 ÷ π ≈ 3.18 in ✓ (fits a standard wine glass foot).

The base should now lie flat like a small disc. If it cups slightly, that's fine — it will hold the glass foot.

Body (sides of cup)

Rounds 6–11: 1 sc in each st around. (40 sts each round — 6 rounds worked)

This creates a solid wall approx. 1.5 in (4 cm) tall that supports the base of the glass.

Mesh Section

The mesh must begin on an even stitch count. You have 40 sts ✓ (40 ÷ 2 = 20 mesh repeats).

Round 12: 1 sc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st; rep from * around. (20 sc + 20 ch-1 sps ✓)

Rounds 13–18: 1 sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, skip next sc; rep from * around. (20 sc + 20 ch-1 sps each round ✓)

This gives 6 mesh rounds total, adding approx. 2.5 in (6.5 cm) of stretchy, breathable height.

At the end of Round 18, sl st into the next sc to close the round neatly.

Drawstring Eyelet Round

Round 19: Ch 1. 1 sc in next sc, ch 2, skip next ch-1 sp and next sc; rep from * around, ending with ch 2, sl st to first sc. (10 sc + 10 ch-2 sps ✓)

Count check: this round consumes stitches in pairs — 20 sc positions ÷ 2 = 10 eyelets ✓. These ch-2 spaces are the channel for your drawstring.

Top Edge

Round 20: Ch 1. Work 2 sc in each ch-2 sp around, 1 sc in each sc around. (10 sps × 2 + 10 sc = 20 + 10 = 30 sts ✓) Sl st to first sc. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Drawstring

Make a chain approx. 24 in (61 cm) long, or long enough to weave through all 10 eyelets with tails to tie. Fasten off, leaving no loose ends to fray (knot each end).

Weave the drawstring in and out through the ch-2 eyelets of Round 19, beginning and ending at the same point. Tie the two ends in a bow to cinch the top closed around the stem of the glass.

Shoulder Strap

The strap attaches at two opposite points on the solid body (Round 11) for maximum strength — never attach a load-bearing strap to the stretchy mesh.

1. Identify two stitches directly opposite each other on Round 11 (20 sts apart).
2. Join yarn with a sl st at the first point.
3. Ch 120 (approx. 30 in / 76 cm). Adjust length here if you prefer a shorter or crossbody strap.
4. To reinforce: 1 sc in the 2nd ch from hook and 1 sc in each ch across (119 sc ✓). This doubles the strap so it won't stretch or dig in.
5. Attach the strap end with a sl st to the second point on Round 11, opposite the start.
6. Fasten off and weave in all ends securely. For extra strength, go over each attachment point 2–3 times with the yarn tail before weaving in.

Finishing

• Weave in all remaining ends with the yarn needle.
• Insert your wine glass, cinch the drawstring around the stem, tie a bow, and sling it over your shoulder.
• Care: Machine wash cold, lay flat to dry (cotton). Remove drawstring bow before washing to prevent tangling.

Tips & Variations

• Larger stemware: Add 1 more base increase round (Round 5a: 1 sc in each of next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st → 48 sts) for a wider foot; keep the mesh count even.
• Extra security: Work 8 rounds of mesh instead of 6 for a taller, more enclosing carrier.
• Color pop: Work the base cup and top edge in a contrasting color for a two-tone look.
