Amigurumi Crochet Cat (Small Plush) - PurlJam
Skill: Easy–Intermediate. Works great for beginners once you know single crochet in the round, invisible decrease and basic sewing.
Finished size
Approximately 6" (15 cm) tall when using worsted weight yarn and recommended hook. Size will vary with yarn/hook.
Materials
- Yarn: Worsted/Aran weight (approx 3.5 oz / 100 g; 220 yd / 200 m) — Main color (MC) ~75 yds / 70 m, Contrast (face/inner ear) ~10 yds / 9 m, Accent (striping or nose) ~5 yds / 5 m.
- Hook: Recommended crochet hook for amigurumi: US G/6 (4.0 mm); UK (old) 8; Metric 4.0 mm. (Use a hook 0.5–1.0 mm smaller than recommended for the yarn to achieve tight fabric.)
- Optional knitting needles (if you prefer to knit parts): US 6 (4.0 mm); UK (old) 8; Metric 4.0 mm.
- Stuffing: Polyester fiberfill, about a small handful (~30–60 g depending on tightness).
- Safety eyes: 9–12 mm (or embroider eyes). If using safety eyes, recommended placement noted below.
- Tapestry needle for sewing and weaving ends.
- Stitch marker to mark beginning of rounds.
- Optional: small amount of felt for nose/inner ear, embroidery floss for whiskers.
Gauge
10 sc x 10 rows = 4" (10 cm) using 4.0 mm hook. Gauge is not critical but will change finished size.
Abbreviations (US crochet)
- MR = Magic ring
- sc = single crochet
- inc = 2 sc in next st
- dec = single crochet decrease (sc2tog or invisible decrease)
- st(s) = stitch(es)
- sl st = slip stitch
-
- FO = fasten off
Notes
- Work in continuous rounds (spiral) unless instructed otherwise. Use a marker to mark the first st of each round.
- Stuff firmly but not so much that stitches spread.
- When attaching safety eyes, place them before stuffing and closing the head.

Nose & Face
- Embroidery nose: With a contrasting yarn or felt, stitch a small triangle and secure. Use a few satin stitches to make a little nose.
- Whiskers: Embroider with embroidery floss or thin yarn—three stitches each side, spaced evenly.
- Mouth: Short vertical stitch under nose and two curved stitches for smile.
Assembly
- Sew head to body: Align head center with body top and use mattress stitch or whipstitch to sew around. Ensure seam is even.
- Attach arms: Sew under the neck area or on the sides of the body, slightly forward-facing so cat can sit on its haunches.
- Attach legs: Sew legs to base of body. Make sure they are level so the cat sits upright.
- Sew ears to top of head symmetrically. Fold base to get triangular ear shape before stitching.
- Attach tail to back of body slightly off-center for a natural look.
- Weave in and hide all ends on the inside.
Finishing & Tips
- Use safety eyes before stuffing and closing head. If the toy is for a child under 3, embroider eyes instead of using safety eyes.
- Make stripes by switching colors every few rounds on body, or add a little collar with a thin contrast stripe at neck seam.
- To vary size: change hook size or yarn weight. For smaller cat, use DK weight yarn with 3.5 mm hook; for larger, bulky yarn with 5.0 mm hook.
- Optional blush: very lightly brush a tiny dab of pastel chalk onto cheeks and seal with fabric medium if desired.
Customization Ideas
- Make loaf-cat: flatten body slightly and shorten tail.
- Add a bell (sewn or safety bell) to the collar area.
- Make sleepy cat by embroidering half-closed eyes and a tiny mouth.
Safety & Care
- Securely sew on all small parts. For toys intended for young children, avoid buttons and safety eyes; use embroidery only.
- Surface-wash only, or gentle hand wash and reshape. Air dry thoroughly.
