Blush & Lavender 3-Tier Spiral Wind Spinner

A long, elegant hanging wind spinner worked as three graduated corkscrew strips. Each strip has a warm ivory central twist, alternating pastel pink and lavender sections, and a matching ivory outer edging. The three tiers are joined at the top with a sturdy hanging loop; the longest tier finishes with a small cream tassel and wooden bead. Tight sc and hdc keep the spirals crisp so the layered structure and color placement stay clearly visible as the piece turns.

Measurements assume the stated gauge and a gently twisted hang. The spirals will coil more tightly or more loosely depending on how you twist them before hanging.

A smooth acrylic or acrylic-blend chunky is ideal if the spinner may hang near a window or porch; cotton-blend chunky gives a slightly heavier, smoother drape. Avoid very fuzzy yarns, which hide the color blocks.

Hook: US K/10.5 (6.5 mm), or the hook needed to match gauge. Use a smaller hook rather than a larger one — tight stitches help the spiral hold its shape.

Gauge

12 sc and 14 rows = 4 in (10 cm) with US K/10.5 (6.5 mm), worked in sc in both loops.

Gauge is not critical for fit, but it does control finished length and how tightly the spirals coil. A tighter gauge than listed is preferable to a looser one. If your 12 sc measure more than 4 in (10 cm), drop to US J/10 (6 mm).

Special Techniques

Color change. Work the last yo of the last stitch of the old color with the new color, then continue in the new color. Cut the old color, leaving a 4 in (10 cm) tail. Do not carry yarn across the back — chunky carries add bulk and show through.

2 hdc in each stitch. This doubling is what makes the strip corkscrew. The cream inner edge (fewer stitches) becomes the central twist; the cream outer edge (twice as many stitches) becomes the outer edging.

Pattern Notes

• US crochet terminology throughout. Imperial measurements are given first, with metric in parentheses.
• Turning ch 1 (sc rows) and turning ch 2 (hdc row) do not count as stitches. Never work into a turning chain.
• Work in both loops of every stitch unless told otherwise.
• Both sides of the fabric will show as the spinner turns; there is no true wrong side.
• Each tier is a long, narrow 3-row strip. It will begin to curl as soon as Row 2 is worked — that curl is the spiral and is desired.
• Stitch counts are given in parentheses at the end of every row. Count at the end of Row 1 and again at the end of Row 2 before you edging.
• Color-block math (all tiers): every block is 12 sc on Row 1 → 24 hdc on Row 2.
• Place a stitch marker in every 12th sc of Row 1. Those markers are the color-change points and will keep the pink/lavender sections even.
• Weave each color tail into its own section as you go. Each tier has several color changes.
• Twist all three finished strips in the same direction before assembly so they nest as a layered helix.

Color sequence (every tier, top to bottom): begin with Color A (pastel pink) and alternate A, B, A, B… so the three tiers line up in color when hung.

Instructions

Tier 1 — Outer / Longest Spiral

Inner edge 40 in (102 cm); 10 color blocks (5 pink, 5 lavender).

With Color C, ch 121.

Row 1 (central twist, Color C): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (120 sc ✓; 121 − 1 skipped ch = 120)

Pm in sts 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84, 96, 108, and 120 (every 12th st, 10 markers ✓). Fasten off Color C, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail at this end — that end is the top.

Row 2 (color body): Join Color A in the first sc (the top / starting end). Ch 2 (does not count as a st).

Work in 12-sc blocks, changing color at each marker:

• In each block except the last: 2 hdc in each of next 12 sc, changing to the next color in the last yo of the 24th hdc.
• Last block: 2 hdc in each of last 12 sc. Fasten off.

Hanging Loop (Color C)

Ch 18, sl st in first ch to form a ring. Ch 1, sc in each ch around, sl st in first sc to close. (18 sc ✓)

Fasten off, leaving a 12 in (30 cm) tail for sewing.

Cream Tassel with Wooden Bead (Color C)

1. Cut one 12 in (30 cm) length of Color C and set it aside (top tie). Cut a second 18 in (46 cm) length and set it aside (neck wrap).
2. Wrap Color C around the 4 in (10 cm) cardboard 25 times. Do not wrap so tightly that you stretch the yarn.
3. Slip the 12 in (30 cm) top tie under the wraps at the top edge of the cardboard and knot tightly, leaving two long tails. These tails will carry the bead and attach the tassel.
4. Slide the wraps off the cardboard. Cut the loops at the bottom edge.
5. Wind the 18 in (46 cm) neck wrap around the tassel about ½ in (1.3 cm) below the top knot, 8 times. Knot securely and bury the ends inside the tassel.
6. Trim the cut ends so the tassel is even and measures 4 in (10 cm) from top knot to tips.
7. Thread both top-tie tails through the wooden bead so the bead sits snugly on top of the tassel neck.

Finishing

1. Set the spirals. Take each strip and twist it firmly in the same direction (all clockwise, or all counterclockwise) so the cream Row-1 edge sits on the inside of the coil and the cream Row-3 edge sits on the outside. The pink and lavender blocks should read as stacked pastel bands. A brief shot of steam from an iron held several inches above the yarn (do not press) will help the coil remember its shape. Let each tier cool and dry while twisted.

2. Stack the tops. Identify the top short end of each strip — the end that begins with Color A (pastel pink), where you left the long Color C tail. Lay Tier 1 (longest) down first, then Tier 2, then Tier 3 (shortest) on top, matching the cream inner-edge corners. You should see three nested pink starting blocks.

3. Join the tiers. With Color C, sew through all three top short edges several times, catching the cream inner corners and the first pink block of each tier so the stack cannot fan apart. Knot securely but do not compress the stack into a hard lump — the tiers should be able to fall into separate layers.

4. Attach the hanging loop. Sew the sc hanging loop to the joined top bundle, centering it over the stacked inner (cream) corners. Take several stitches through the loop base and through all three tiers. Weave in the sewing tail.

5. Attach the tassel. Using the two tails above the wooden bead, sew through the bottom short end of Tier 1 only (the longest strip). Knot on the reverse of that end so the bead sits just under the last lavender block of Tier 1 and the tassel hangs free. Tiers 2 and 3 remain unweighted at their lower ends so they can layer above the tassel. Weave in remaining tails.

6. Hang and adjust. Hang from the loop. Starting at the top, arrange the three coils so they nest: shortest inside / highest, middle around it, longest outside / lowest. If a tier has sprung too open, twist it a little tighter in the same direction as the others. The cream inner edges should read as one continuous central twist; the cream sc of Row 3 should outline every outer rim; pink and lavender should alternate down the length of all three layers.

Care

Spot-clean or hand-wash cold, reshape the coils, and hang to dry. Do not machine-dry. If the spirals relax over time, retwist them in the original direction and hang overnight with the tassel as a weight.
