Bucket Hat Crown

An unofficial fan motif for personal use only. Work a flat-to-slightly-domed circle in US single crochet: yellow field, black bird from the attached chart, and a black rim. Use the finished circle as the top of a bucket hat.

Skill level: Beginner (single crochet in the round, simple 2-color tapestry)

Materials

Yarn: DROPS Safran (100% cotton; sport weight; 174 yd / 160 m per 1.75 oz / 50 g ball)

• MC (yellow): color 11 Strong Yellow (or 10 Yellow) — 1 ball (about 120 yd / 110 m)
• CC (black): color 16 Black — 1 ball (about 45 yd / 40 m)

Hook: US E-4 / 3.5 mm, or size needed to obtain gauge

Gauge

22 sc and 24 rnds = 4" (10 cm) in single crochet, worked in the round, after light blocking.

Check before you start: A 6-round swatch (36 sc) should measure about 2" (5 cm) across. If your circle is larger, go down a hook size; if smaller, go up a hook size. Crown size depends on gauge.

Size

Adult crown, 7¼" (18.5 cm) diameter.

To change size, keep the same increase rhythm and stop when the circle matches your hat: about 6" (15 cm) for child, 7½–8" (19–20 cm) for a roomy adult crown. Recalculate the side of the hat from the stitch count you actually have.

Pattern Notes

• US crochet terms throughout. Sc is US single crochet (UK double crochet).
• Work in joined rounds with RS always facing. Do not turn.
• Each increase rnd adds 6 sts, placed as (sc in next X sts, inc) six times.
• Join: sl st in first sc of the rnd. Start the next rnd with ch 1 (does not count as a st), then sc in the same st as the join unless the round says otherwise.
• Magic-ring alternative: ch 2, work Rnd 1 into the second ch from the hook, and pull the tail to close.
• Carry CC only on chart rnds. On solid MC or solid CC rnds, drop the unused color.
• Keep carried yarn loose on the WS so the circle does not pucker.
• Color change: work the last yo of the previous sc with the new color.
• The circle will sit slightly domed — that is correct for a hat crown. If it ruffles, your stitches are too wide for the round count; try a smaller hook. If it cups hard, your stitches are too tall or tight; try a larger hook or block gently.

How to read it (crochet, in the round):

• The chart is the Bodø/Glimt bird on the yellow field. Each square = 1 sc. Each chart ring = one crochet round.
• Work from the center out, matching written Rnds 7–16.
• Read every round in the direction you crochet (right to left for right-handed work), starting at the same point as your round join. That join is the start of each chart ring.
• Yellow squares = MC. Black squares = CC. Change color on the last yo of the stitch before a new color.
• Do not skip increases to “fit” the picture. The chart is drawn to the stitch counts below. If a square sits in an increase stitch, work both sc of that inc in the color shown for that square (or split the pair if the chart shows two colors on those two sc).

Color management and stitch-count integration:

• Chart rnds use the same counts as the written pattern:

Rnd 7 = 42 sts · Rnd 8 = 48 sts · Rnd 9 = 54 sts · Rnd 10 = 60 sts · Rnd 11 = 66 sts · Rnd 12 = 72 sts · Rnd 13 = 78 sts · Rnd 14 = 84 sts · Rnd 15 = 90 sts · Rnd 16 = 96 sts.

• Rnd n has 6 × n stitches (example: Rnd 12 → 6 × 12 = 72 ✓). Each chart ring has that many squares.
• Tapestry: lay the unused color along the top of the previous round and crochet over it. Catch the float at least every 3–4 sts. Do not pull the carried yarn tight.
• If a stretch of 8 or more sts is one color, you may drop the other yarn and pick it up at the next color change (leave a 3" / 7.5 cm tail to weave later). For a beginner, carrying throughout Rnds 7–16 is simpler.
• After Rnd 16, cut CC leaving a 6" (15 cm) tail unless you prefer to carry it up the WS to the black rim. Resume solid MC on Rnd 17.

Instructions

Crown circle

With MC, make a MR.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, 6 sc in ring, sl st to first sc. Pull ring closed. (6 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, inc in each st around, sl st to first sc. (6 inc → 6 + 6 = 12 ✓)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, *sc in next st, inc; rep from * around, sl st to first sc. (6 inc → 12 + 6 = 18 ✓)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, *sc in next 2 sts, inc; rep from * around, sl st to first sc. (6 inc → 18 + 6 = 24 ✓)

Rnd 5: Ch 1, *sc in next 3 sts, inc; rep from * around, sl st to first sc. (6 inc → 24 + 6 = 30 ✓)

Rnd 6: Ch 1, *sc in next 4 sts, inc; rep from * around, sl st to first sc. (6 inc → 30 + 6 = 36 ✓)

Join CC at the first color change of Rnd 7. Work Rnds 7–16 in tapestry sc, colors from the attached chart, increases as written.

Rnd 7: Ch 1, *sc in next 5 sts, inc; rep from * around, sl st to first sc. (6 inc → 36 + 6 = 42 ✓)

Rnd 8: Ch 1, *sc in next 6 sts, inc; rep from * around, sl st to first sc. (6 inc → 42 + 6 = 48 ✓)

Rnd 9: Ch 1, *sc in next 7 sts, inc; rep from * around, sl st to first sc. (6 inc → 48 + 6 = 54 ✓)

Rnd 10: Ch 1, *sc in next 8 sts, inc; rep from * around, sl st to first sc. (6 inc → 54 + 6 = 60 ✓)

Rnd 11: Ch 1, *sc in next 9 sts, inc; rep from * around, sl st to first sc. (6 inc → 60 + 6 = 66 ✓)

Rnd 12: Ch 1, *sc in next 10 sts, inc; rep from * around, sl st to first sc. (6 inc → 66 + 6 = 72 ✓)

Rnd 13: Ch 1, *sc in next 11 sts, inc; rep from * around, sl st to first sc. (6 inc → 72 + 6 = 78 ✓)

Rnd 14: Ch 1, *sc in next 12 sts, inc; rep from * around, sl st to first sc. (6 inc → 78 + 6 = 84 ✓)

Rnd 15: Ch 1, *sc in next 13 sts, inc; rep from * around, sl st to first sc. (6 inc → 84 + 6 = 90 ✓)

Rnd 16: Ch 1, *sc in next 14 sts, inc; rep from * around, sl st to first sc. (6 inc → 90 + 6 = 96 ✓)

Cut CC (or carry up WS). Continue with MC only.

Rnd 17: Ch 1, *sc in next 15 sts, inc; rep from * around, sl st to first sc. (6 inc → 96 + 6 = 102 ✓)

Rnd 18: Ch 1, *sc in next 16 sts, inc; rep from * around, sl st to first sc. (6 inc → 102 + 6 = 108 ✓)

Rnd 19: Ch 1, *sc in next 17 sts, inc; rep from * around, sl st to first sc. (6 inc → 108 + 6 = 114 ✓)

Rnd 20: Ch 1, *sc in next 18 sts, inc; rep from * around, sl st to first sc. (6 inc → 114 + 6 = 120 ✓)

Rnd 21: Ch 1, *sc in next 19 sts, inc; rep from * around, sl st to first sc. (6 inc → 120 + 6 = 126 ✓)

Join CC. Cut MC.

Rnd 22 (black rim): Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to first sc. (126 sc even ✓)

Do not fasten off if you will crochet the hat sides onto this edge. If this circle is a sewn-on patch, fasten off CC leaving a 12" (30 cm) tail.

Circle should measure about 7¼" (18.5 cm) across.

Finishing

1. Weave in all ends on the WS (inside of the hat). Tug the magic-ring tail firm and weave it through the first round so the center cannot open.
2. Block lightly: pin the circle to 7¼" (18.5 cm), mist with water, and dry flat. Do not stretch the bird out of shape.
3. As a bucket-hat top (join-as-you-go): With RS facing and 126 sts live, work the hat sides in the round from Rnd 22 without increasing until the side depth you want, then add the brim. At 22 sc = 4", 126 sts = 23" (58 cm) around (126 ÷ 22 × 4 = 22.9" ✓).
4. As a sewn patch: Center the circle on a finished crown and whipstitch through the back loops of Rnd 22 with CC.

Beginner tips

• Count stitches at the end of every round. You should always have a multiple of 6.
• If the bird looks shifted, your round join has drifted; place a marker in the first st after every join.
• If black specks show on the yellow field, you are splitting the carried yarn — lay it on top of the stitches, then work over it, not through it.
