Sakura Blooming Scarf

A simple rectangular scarf in garter stitch, inspired by cherry blossoms. Knit every row in a soft sakura pink — or add optional cream stripes for falling petals. Reversible, beginner-friendly, and relaxing.

Skill level: Beginner

Materials

Yarn: Worsted weight (category 4), approximately 350 yd / 320 m.

• Main color (MC): Sakura pink, blush, or a pink-and-cream variegated yarn — 350 yd / 320 m if working solid; 280 yd / 256 m if adding stripes.
• Contrast color (CC), optional: Cream or off-white for petal stripes — 70 yd / 64 m.

A smooth wool, wool-blend, or acrylic worsted all work. Two 200 yd / 183 m skeins of MC is a comfortable amount for the solid version.

Needles: US 8 / 5 mm straight needles, or a 24" / 60 cm circular used flat.

Notions: Tapestry needle, scissors, measuring tape. Optional: 4" / 10 cm piece of cardboard for fringe.

Gauge

18 stitches and 36 rows = 4" / 10 cm in garter stitch (knit every row), unblocked.

A scarf is forgiving, but gauge affects width. If you have more than 18 sts in 4" / 10 cm, the scarf will be narrower; if fewer, it will be wider. Adjust needle size to get close to gauge, or cast on 2 sts more or fewer to fine-tune width.

Finished Size

Approximately 8" / 20.5 cm wide × 60" / 152.5 cm long, unblocked, excluding optional fringe.

(36 sts ÷ 18 sts per 4" × 4" = 8" ✓)

Length is easily customized: knit until the piece measures the length you want.

Abbreviations

• BO — bind off
• CC — contrast color
• CO — cast on
• k — knit
• MC — main color

Pattern

With MC, CO 36 sts using a long-tail (or your favorite) cast-on. Do not cast on tightly.

Row 1: Knit all sts.

Repeat Row 1 (knit every row) until the scarf measures 60" / 152.5 cm from the cast-on edge, or until desired length.

(At 36 rows = 4", 60" requires about 540 rows / 270 garter ridges ✓. Measuring the fabric is more reliable than counting rows.)

Bind off: BO all sts knitwise. Keep the bind-off as elastic as the cast-on so both ends match.

Optional petal stripes (still beginner)

Work the entire scarf in garter stitch as above, changing color only at the start of a row:

• 20 ridges MC (40 rows), then 2 ridges CC (4 rows). Repeat this sequence until the scarf is about 60" / 152.5 cm, ending with MC.
• Cut CC at each stripe, leaving 6" / 15 cm tails to weave in (or carry CC up the edge if you prefer fewer ends — the edge will show a small float).

Garter ridges: each ridge is 2 rows. Count ridges on one face of the fabric.

Finishing

1. Weave in all ends with a tapestry needle, following the garter ridges so they disappear into the fabric.
2. Block lightly if desired: soak in lukewarm water, press out water in a towel (do not wring), and lay flat to the finished measurements. Garter stitch looks neat even unblocked.
3. Optional fringe: Cut 8" / 20.5 cm strands of MC (and CC if used). For each fringe bundle, use 3 strands. Fold in half, pull the loop through a stitch at the short end of the scarf, then pull the tails through the loop and tighten. Place one bundle in every other stitch across both short ends (about 18 bundles per end). Trim evenly to 3" / 7.5 cm.

The scarf is reversible — there is no right or wrong side. Wear it long, wrapped once, or looped.
