# TEXTURED CIRCLE WALL ART

A modern, textured wall hanging perfect for adding a handmade touch to any space. This circular design features concentric rings of varying textures created with simple stitch height changes. Great beginner project that introduces working in the round and creates an impressive finished piece.

## MATERIALS

**Yarn:** Worsted weight yarn (#4 Medium)
- Main Color (MC): 200 yards (183 m)
- Optional Contrast Color (CC): 50 yards (46 m) for color blocking effect

*Sample uses Lion Brand Wool-Ease in Navy (MC) and Cream (CC)*

**Hook:** US Size H/8 (5.0 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

**Notions:**
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Scissors
- Wooden dowel or branch, 14 inches (35.5 cm) long (for hanging)
- Stitch marker

**Gauge:** 16 dc and 8 rounds = 4 inches (10 cm) in double crochet, worked in the round

*Gauge is important for finished size. If your piece is too small, use a larger hook. If too large, use a smaller hook.*

## PATTERN NOTES

- This wall hanging is worked in joined rounds from the center outward.
- Ch 2 at beginning of dc rounds does NOT count as a stitch.
- Ch 1 at beginning of sc/hdc rounds does NOT count as a stitch.
- Join each round with sl st to first stitch of round (not to beginning chain).
- Stitch count is provided at end of each round in parentheses.
- For a flat circle in dc, increase by 12 stitches evenly spaced each round.
- Use stitch marker to mark beginning of round if desired.
- Color changes are optional - entire piece can be worked in MC.

**Special Stitch:**
- **Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc):** Yo, insert hook from front to back to front around post of indicated stitch (going around the front of the stitch), yo and pull up loop, [yo, pull through 2 loops] twice.

## INSTRUCTIONS

### ROUND 1 (CENTER):
With MC, create a magic ring (or ch 4 and sl st to first ch to form ring).

Ch 2 (does not count as st), work 12 dc into ring, pull tail to tighten ring, sl st to first dc to join. (12 dc)

### ROUND 2:
Ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, sl st to first dc to join. (24 dc)

*Mathematical verification: 12 sts × 2 = 24 sts ✓*

### ROUND 3:
Ch 2, [2 dc in next st, dc in next st] rep around, sl st to first dc to join. (36 dc)

*Mathematical verification: 12 increases + 12 dc = 36 sts ✓*

### ROUND 4:
Ch 2, [2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts] rep around, sl st to first dc to join. (48 dc)

*Mathematical verification: 12 increases + 24 dc = 48 sts ✓*

### ROUND 5:
Ch 2, [2 dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts] rep around, sl st to first dc to join. (60 dc)

**Optional color change:** Switch to CC at end of Round 7 by completing last sl st with CC. Cut MC leaving 6-inch tail.

### ROUND 8:
Ch 2, [2 dc in next st, dc in next 5 sts] rep around, sl st to first dc to join. (84 dc)

### ROUND 9:
Ch 1, hdc in each st around, sl st to first hdc to join. (84 hdc)

*Note: Another texture ring created by stitch height change.*

**Optional color change:** Switch back to MC if using CC.

### ROUND 10:
Ch 2, [fpdc around next st, dc in next st] rep around, sl st to first fpdc to join. (84 sts)

*Note: This creates a ribbed texture on the outer edge.*

### ROUND 11 (EDGING):
Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to first sc to join. (84 sc)

Fasten off, leaving a 12-inch (30.5 cm) tail for weaving in.

## HANGING LOOPS (Make 2)

With MC, ch 16.

**Row 1:** Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (15 sc)

Fasten off, leaving a 10-inch (25.5 cm) tail for sewing.

## FINISHING

1. **Weave in all ends** on the wrong side of the work using yarn needle.

2. **Blocking:** For best results, wet block the circle. Dampen the piece with water (spray bottle or gentle hand washing), pin to a blocking mat or towel in a perfect circle shape, and allow to dry completely. This will even out stitches and ensure the piece lies flat.

3. **Attach hanging loops:** 
   - Fold each hanging loop in half.
   - Position loops on the back of the wall art, approximately 3 inches (7.5 cm) from each side of center top.
   - Use the long tails to sew the ends of each loop securely to the back of Round 11, stitching through multiple stitches for strength.
   - Weave in remaining ends.

4. **Insert dowel or branch:** Thread the wooden dowel through both hanging loops from side to side.

5. **Add hanging cord:** Tie a length of yarn, twine, or cord to each end of the dowel for hanging on wall.

**Display tip:** For a layered look, make multiple circles in different sizes and colors and overlap them on the wall.

## DESIGN VARIATIONS

**Larger Size:** Continue the increase pattern (adding 12 sts per round) for Rounds 12-15, working as follows:
- Round 12: [2 dc in next st, dc in next 6 sts] rep around (96 dc)
- Round 13: [2 dc in next st, dc in next 7 sts] rep around (108 dc)
- Round 14: [2 dc in next st, dc in next 8 sts] rep around (120 dc)
- Round 15: [2 dc in next st, dc in next 9 sts] rep around (132 dc)

Then complete Rounds 10-11 as written. Final diameter approximately 16 inches (40.5 cm).

**Color Block Design:** Work Rounds 1-4 in MC, Rounds 5-7 in CC, Rounds 8-11 in MC.

**Minimalist Design:** Work entire piece in one color without texture variations - use all dc for Rounds 1-8, then work Rounds 10-11 as written.
