Complete Crochet Pattern – 3 Styles + 2 Butterfly Appliqués

Materials

• Yarn: Worsted weight (#4) acrylic or cotton blend, approx 60–80 yd (55–75 m) main color (MC) per pair + 15 yd (14 m) contrasting color (CC) for butterflies/edging
  Suggested: Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, Red Heart Soft, or Paintbox Simply Aran
• Hook: US G/6 (4.0 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge
  Optional: US E/4 (3.5 mm) for tighter butterfly edges
• Notions: Yarn needle, stitch markers, scissors, 2 small buttons or beads (optional for butterfly bodies)

Gauge

16 sc × 18 rows = 4″ (10 cm) in single crochet
Check gauge—sole length is critical for fit.

Special Stitches

Bobble (bo): Yo, insert hook in st, yo, pull up loop, yo, pull through 2 loops; [yo, insert hook in same st, yo, pull up loop, yo, pull through 2 loops] 3 times (5 loops on hook), yo, pull through all 5 loops. Ch 1 to close.
Shell: 5 dc in same st or sp.
Picot: Ch 3, sl st in first ch.

Pattern Notes

• Booties are worked sole-up in joined rounds unless stated. Join with sl st to first st of rnd; ch 1 or ch 2 at start of rnd does not count as a stitch unless noted.
• Move stitch marker up each rnd to mark beginning.
• Instructions are written for Newborn with (0–3 months, 3–6 months) in parentheses. When only one number appears, it applies to all sizes.
• Make 2 booties alike.
• Butterfly appliqués are optional and interchangeable across all three styles.
• Weave in ends as you go for clean Instagram photos.

PART A – BASIC BOOTIE (Shared Sole & Body)

Work the sole and lower body first, then follow the style-specific cuff and finishing.

Sole (all styles)

With MC and G/6 hook:
Rnd 1: Ch 9 (10, 11). Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 6 (7, 8) ch, 3 sc in last ch. Rotate to work along opposite side of foundation ch: sc in next 6 (7, 8) ch, 2 sc in last ch (same as first st). Join. (18 [20, 22] sc)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 6 (7, 8) sts, 2 sc in next 3 sts, sc in next 6 (7, 8) sts, 2 sc in last 2 sts. Join. (24 [26, 28] sc)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 7 (8, 9) sts, [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] 3 times, sc in next 6 (7, 8) sts, [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] 2 times. Join. (30 [32, 34] sc)
Rnd 4 (NB only): Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. (30 sc)
Rnd 4 (0–3 & 3–6): Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 8 (9) sts, [2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts] 3 times, sc in next 7 (8) sts, [2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts] 2 times. Join. (38 [40] sc)
Rnd 5 (0–3 only): Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. (38 sc)
Rnd 5 (3–6 only): Ch 1, sc evenly, increasing 2 sts spaced at toe and 2 at heel (place increases over previous increase points). Join. (44 sc)
Rnd 6 (3–6 only): Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. (44 sc)

Sole stitch counts after final sole rnd:
Newborn 30 sc | 0–3 months 38 sc | 3–6 months 44 sc
(Length should measure 3.5″ / 4″ / 4.5″.)

Lower Body (sides – all styles)

Rnd 1: Ch 1, working in BLO for this rnd only, sc in each st around. Join. (30 [38, 44] sc)
Rnds 2–4 (2–5, 2–6): Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. (30 [38, 44] sc)
Place markers for ankle opening: count 10 (13, 15) sts from join for center back heel; mark the 5th (7th, 8th) st on each side of center back—these two markers indicate the start/end of the instep (top-of-foot) section that will be worked flat next.
Instep sts between markers: 10 (12, 14) sts.

Instep (worked flat in rows)

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in next 10 (12, 14) sts (the marked instep section only). Turn. (10 [12, 14] sc)
Rows 2–5 (2–6, 2–7): Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (10 [12, 14] sc)
Fasten off, leaving a 12″ tail for seaming if desired (or continue seamlessly).

Ankle Opening Setup

Rejoin MC at either side marker (corner where instep meets body).
Work sc evenly down the side of the instep rows (5 [6, 7] sc), across the remaining heel/side sts, and up the other side of the instep (5 [6, 7] sc).
Total ankle sts now: 30 (38, 44) sc again. Do not join yet—begin style-specific cuff below.

PART B – THREE DESIGN STYLES (Cuff & Finishing)

Style 1: Modern Minimal

Clean lines, no texture, contemporary solid or tonal look.
Cuff
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each of the 30 (38, 44) ankle sts. Join.
Rnds 2–6 (2–7, 2–8): Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join.
Rnd 7 (8, 9) – Optional folded cuff: Ch 1, sc in BLO around. Join. Fasten off.
Fold cuff down for a neat modern edge.

Finishing: Weave ends. Lightly steam-block sole flat. Add simple butterfly if desired.

Style 2: Vintage Soft

Gentle shells and picot edge for heirloom feel.
Cuff
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each ankle st around. Join. (30 [38, 44])
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, skip 1, shell in next st, skip 1; rep from * around, adjusting last shell to land evenly (on NB you may need to skip 2 once). Join to first sc.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in first sc, ch 1, (sc, picot, sc) in center dc of next shell, ch 1; rep around. Join. Fasten off.

Finishing: Weave ends. Block gently to open shells. Attach vintage butterfly.

Style 3: Textured Cute

Cuff
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each ankle st around. Join. (30 [38, 44])

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in each st around (treat bobble + its closing ch as one st). Join.

Finishing: Weave ends. Do not over-block—preserve bobble texture. Add layered butterfly for maximum cuteness.

PART C – BUTTERFLY APPLIQUÉS (make 2 per pair or as desired)

Butterfly Version 1: Simple Rounded

Quick, flat, beginner-friendly.
With CC and G/6 (or E/4 for firmer shape):
Body: Ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 4 ch. Fasten off, leave tails for antennae. (5 sc)
Wing (make 2):
Rnd 1: Magic ring, ch 2, 8 hdc in ring. Join. (8 hdc)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around. Join. (16 sc)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, *sc in next st, 2 sc in next; rep from * around. Join. (24 sc)
Fasten off.
Sew one wing to each side of body, slightly overlapping. Use body tails to embroider 2 small antennae curls. Optional: French-knot eyes or tiny bead.

Butterfly Version 2: Layered Detailed

Dimensional, intermediate.
Lower wings (make 2):
Magic ring, ch 3, 11 dc in ring. Join. (12 dc)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc, hdc, 2 dc, hdc, sc in next 2 sts; rep from * around (creates 4 lobed petals). Join. Fasten off.
Upper wings (make 2):
Magic ring, ch 2, 8 hdc in ring. Join.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each. Join. (16 sc)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, *sc in next, (hdc, dc, hdc) in next, sc in next; rep from * around. Join. Fasten off.
Body: Same as Version 1 or work a small I-cord / ch-5 tube stuffed lightly.
Layer upper wing on top of lower wing, offset slightly, and sew both to body. Add antennae and optional sparkle bead at center.

Finishing (all styles)

1. Weave in all ends securely (babies chew!).
2. Sew butterfly to outer side of each bootie vamp (instep) with matching yarn or invisible thread—3–5 small stitches through body only so wings stay free.
3. Optional: add a tiny button or embroidery French knot for butterfly body detail.
4. Pair booties, tie with ribbon or baker’s twine for gifting.
5. Gentle hand wash, lay flat to dry.

Tips for Beginners

• Count stitches at the end of every sole round—oval shaping is easiest to fix early.
• Use a running stitch marker (scrap yarn) instead of a locking marker so it never snags baby skin.
• When working BLO for the first body round, keep tension relaxed so the sole doesn’t cup.
• Practice one bobble and one shell on a swatch before starting the cuff.
• If the ankle feels tight, go up a hook size for the cuff only.
• Block the sole by pinning to a cardboard template of the finished measurements.
