⭐ Twinkle Star Baby Blanket

A beginner-friendly machine-knit blanket with a single centered five-point star

A cozy stockinette baby blanket knit flat in one piece on a standard-gauge machine. A simple two-color Fair Isle star sits front and center on a soft solid background, framed by a tidy contrast border. Perfect first colorwork project.

Materials

• Yarn: Worsted weight (Aran/#4), machine-friendly acrylic or superwash wool blend
  • Main Color (MC): ~450 yds (e.g., soft cream)
  • Contrast Color (CC): ~180 yds (e.g., sky blue) — for star + border
• Machine: Standard gauge (4.5 mm), single bed. No ribber required.
  • Suitable for punchcard or electronic machines (24-stitch motif provided).
• Tools: 1–2 transfer tools, cast-on comb, claw/edge weights, ravel cord, waste yarn, latch tool, darning needle.

Worsted on standard gauge note: Worsted is at the heavy end for a 4.5 mm bed. Use every-other-needle (EON) is NOT needed here — knit on every needle at a loose tension (T7–T8). Test your gauge first.

Tension / Gauge

Knit a swatch at least 40 sts × 40 rows in stockinette before starting.

• Stockinette (MC), T7: 20 sts × 28 rows = 4 in × 4 in (10 cm × 10 cm)
  • → 5 sts per inch, 7 rows per inch
• Fair Isle section (MC+CC), T8: knit slightly looser to accommodate floats; row height stays ~7 rows/in.

Adjust tension until your swatch matches. All stitch/row math below assumes 5 sts/in and 7 rows/in.

Finished Size

• Width: 30 in (76 cm)
• Length: ~34 in (86 cm)
• One size (standard receiving-blanket size).

Math check: 150 sts ÷ 5 sts/in = 30 in ✓ · 240 rows ÷ 7 rows/in = 34.3 in ✓

Pattern Notes

• Blanket is worked flat, bottom-up, in one piece on the main bed.
• Star motif is 24 sts wide, centered on the 150-st panel: 63 border sts – 24 motif sts – 63 border sts (63 + 24 + 63 = 150 ✓).
• The star is worked in Fair Isle (MC background, CC star). If your machine has no color changer, change yarns manually at the edge.
• Keep floats loose — do not let CC pull the fabric in. Weight generously.
• Stockinette curls; the CC garter-look border rows plus final blocking fix this.
• Electronic machines: program the 24×24 star chart below, centered. Punchcard machines: punch the chart onto a card (24-st repeat width; do not repeat sideways—use single motif).

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Machine Setup & Waste-Yarn Cast-On

1. Bring 150 needles into work, centered on bed (75 left of center 0, 75 right). Single bed only.
2. Set carriage for plain knitting. COR.
3. With WY, cast on and knit 12–15 rows. Hang cast-on comb and weights.
4. Knit 1 row with ravel cord, then 1 more WY row. Carriage returns to COR.
5. Set RC = 000.

2. Bottom Border (CC)

1. Thread CC, tension T7.
2. Knit 8 rows in CC. → RC 008, COR.
   • (8 rows ÷ 7 rows/in ≈ 1.1 in border)

3. Lower Body (MC)

1. Thread MC, keep T7.
2. Knit 44 rows in MC. → RC 052, COR.
   • This brings the blanket up ~6.4 in before the star begins, centering the motif vertically. (RC 52 + star 24 rows + ~120 rows above = ~RC 240; see checks below.)

4. Star Section — Fair Isle (MC + CC)

1. Electronic: select the star pattern, position it centered over needles (32L to 32R covering the 24 center sts). Punchcard: insert card, set to read, lock on row 1, then release.
2. Set carriage to Fair Isle (FI). Set both feeders: MC in feeder A (background), CC in feeder B (star).
3. Increase tension to T8 for the colorwork section.
4. Knit 24 rows in Fair Isle, following the 24-row chart. → RC 076, COR.
   • Check floats each pass — keep CC loose; move weights up.
5. Turn OFF Fair Isle. Remove/drop CC. Return tension to T7. Set carriage back to plain knitting.

5. Upper Body (MC)

1. Thread MC only, T7.
2. Knit 156 rows in MC. → RC 232, COR.

6. Top Border (CC)

1. Thread CC, T7.
2. Knit 8 rows in CC. → RC 240, COR.

RC / Length verification: Bottom border 8 + lower body 44 + star 24 + upper body 156 + top border 8 = 240 rows ✓ 240 rows ÷ 7 rows/in = 34.3 in ✓ Star vertical center: rows below star mid = 8 + 44 + 12 = 64; rows above star mid = 12 + 156 + 8 = 176 → the star sits in the lower-center, a classic single-star placement. For dead-center, swap step 9 to 100 rows and step 16 to 100 rows (still totals 240). (8+100+24+100+8 = 240 ✓)

7. Bind-Off

1. With CC still threaded (or MC—your choice), knit 1 loose row at T9 to loosen the top edge.
2. Latch-tool bind-off across all 150 sts: transfer the first st to the latch tool, pick up the next st through it, pull through; repeat to the end. This gives a stretchy, non-curling edge.
3. Cut yarn, pull tail through last loop.

Finishing

1. Remove waste yarn: unravel the WY from the cast-on edge by pulling the ravel cord; the live MC/CC bottom loops will appear. Either latch-tool bind-off that edge to match the top, or thread a darning needle and work a chain bind-off through the live loops.
2. Weave in ends: secure all MC/CC tails on the wrong side, especially at the star color-change edges.
3. Block: pin the blanket flat to 30 in × 34 in on a blocking mat. Steam gently (do not press flat if using acrylic—hover the steam to "kill" curl without flattening the texture, or wet-block wool blends).
4. Check floats: on the wrong side, ensure star floats are even and not puckering. Ease any tight floats with your fingers before blocking dries.
