Chunky Cable Knitted Sweater Pattern

This pattern will guide you in creating a cozy chunky cable knitted sweater with a plain middle part in the front. The combination of cables and plain knit adds a touch of elegance to this classic sweater.

Materials:

Gauge:

14 stitches and 20 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.

Size:

This pattern is for a size medium. Finished bust circumference: 40 inches.

Instructions:

  1. Back:
  2. Cast on 80 stitches using the circular needles. Work in stockinette stitch for 10 inches.

  3. Cable Pattern:
  4. Row 1: (RS) P10, K20, P10.

    Row 2: (WS) K across.

    Row 3: P10, slip next 5 stitches onto cable needle and hold in back, K5, K5 from cable needle, P10.

    Row 4: K across.

    Repeat Rows 1-4 until the cable pattern measures 8 inches. End with a WS row.

  5. Front:
  6. Work as for back until the cable pattern measures 5 inches. Place center 20 stitches on hold. Work each side separately in stockinette stitch for 5 inches.

    Join the center stitches back in and continue in cable pattern until it matches the back.

  7. Sleeves:
  8. Using double-pointed needles, cast on 36 stitches. Work in stockinette stitch for 6 inches.

    Next row: K3, M1, K to last 3 stitches, M1, K3.

    Repeat the increase row every 6th row 6 more times. (50 stitches)

  9. Finishing:
  10. Join shoulder seams. Pick up stitches around the neck and work in K1, P1 rib for 1 inch. Bind off loosely.

    Join side and sleeve seams. Weave in all ends.
