An intermediate-level knitting project worked with a US 8 and 9 / UK 6 and 5 / 5mm and 5.5mm needles.
1. Using smaller needles and red yarn, cast on 100 (110, 120, 130) stitches. Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 2 inches. 2. Switch to larger needles. Join blue yarn and knit in stockinette stitch until piece measures 8 (8.5, 9, 9.5) inches from the cast on edge. 3. Create color block: switch back to red yarn and knit for 5 (6, 7, 8) inches. Switch to blue yarn and complete sweater in stockinette stitch. 4. Continue knitting until the piece measures 18 (19, 20, 21) inches from the cast on edge. 5. Shape armholes: Bind off 4 (5, 6, 7) stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Then decrease 1 stitch at each edge every other row 3 (4, 5, 6) times. 6. Continue knitting until armhole measures 7 (7.5, 8, 8.5) inches. 7. Shape Neckline: Bind off center 20 stitches and work each side separately. Decrease 1 stitch at neck edge every other row 5 times. 8. Work even until armhole measures same as back. 9. Join red yarn and knit 2 rows. Bind off all stitches. 10. Sew side and shoulder seams.
