Blank-Chart Practice Scarf

A soft, beginner-friendly garter-stitch scarf in worsted yarn. The centre panel is left ready for you to fill the separate blank stitch charts with any motif, colourwork or texture you like. The written pattern is complete on its own—if you never fill the charts you will still have a perfectly usable garter scarf.

Materials

• Worsted-weight yarn (UK aran): 400 g / 800 m main colour (MC)
• Optional contrast colours for chart motifs: small amounts as desired
• Needles: 4.5 mm (UK 7) straight or circular needles
• Notions: tapestry needle, scissors, locking stitch markers (optional)

Tension (Gauge)

20 stitches and 40 rows = 10 cm × 10 cm over garter stitch (knit every row) after light blocking. Always work a swatch and adjust needle size if necessary.

Size

One size: 20 cm wide × 150 cm long (blocked). To change length, work more or fewer plain garter rows outside the chart zones.

Pattern Notes

• Scarf is worked flat from short end to short end.
• Selvedge stitches (first and last 5 sts) are always worked the same way and are never part of any chart.
• The centre 31 stitches form the chart panel. Two blank charts are supplied as separate attached files; fill them with any stitch pattern whose repeat fits 31 stitches (or a multiple that centres nicely).
• If you prefer not to use charts, simply knit every row in MC for the entire scarf.
• All slipped-stitch edges create a neat chain selvedge for easy finishing.

Attached Stitch Chart

Use the two separate blank chart panels supplied with this pattern (Chart A – first motif zone; Chart B – second motif zone).
They appear immediately after the written pattern in your download package / pattern file set.

How to read the blank charts (knitting):

• Each blank square represents one stitch.
• Rows are numbered bottom-to-top.
• RS rows (odd numbers) are read right-to-left; WS rows (even numbers) are read left-to-right.
• Because the base fabric is garter stitch, every row is knit unless you deliberately place purl, yarn-over, decrease or colour-change symbols in the blanks.
• Colour changes: write the colour key in the legend box on each chart. Carry yarn loosely across the back or use intarsia as preferred; weave ends in as you go.
• Stitch-count integration: the chart is exactly 31 stitches wide. Work the 5 selvedge stitches either side of the chart as written; total stitch count remains 41 at all times (5 + 31 + 5 = 41 ✓).

Instructions

Cast On

With MC and 4.5 mm needles, cast on 41 sts.

Lower Border

Row 1 (RS): sl1 wyif, k to end.
Row 2 (WS): sl1 wyif, k to end.
Repeat Rows 1–2 until border measures 10 cm (40 rows), ending after a WS row.

First Chart Zone (Chart A)

Next row (RS): sl1 wyif, k4, pm, work Row 1 of attached blank Chart A across the next 31 sts, pm, k5.
Next row (WS): sl1 wyif, k4, sm, work Row 2 of Chart A across the next 31 sts, sm, k5.
Continue as established, working subsequent rows of Chart A between the markers and keeping the 5-st garter selvedges correct, until all rows of Chart A are complete.
(Stitch count remains 41 throughout ✓.)

Middle Section

Remove markers.
Next row (RS): sl1 wyif, k to end.
Next row (WS): sl1 wyif, k to end.
Repeat these 2 rows until the middle section measures 90 cm (360 rows), ending after a WS row.

Second Chart Zone (Chart B)

Next row (RS): sl1 wyif, k4, pm, work Row 1 of attached blank Chart B across the next 31 sts, pm, k5.
Next row (WS): sl1 wyif, k4, sm, work Row 2 of Chart B across the next 31 sts, sm, k5.
Continue as established until all rows of Chart B are complete.
(Stitch count remains 41 throughout ✓.)

Upper Border

Remove markers.
Next row (RS): sl1 wyif, k to end.
Next row (WS): sl1 wyif, k to end.
Repeat these 2 rows until upper border measures 10 cm (40 rows), ending after a WS row.

Cast Off

Cast off knitwise loosely on the RS. Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in all ends securely on the WS.
Block gently to finished measurements: 20 cm wide × 150 cm long.
If you filled the blank charts with colourwork or textured stitches, take care to block those areas evenly so the motifs lie flat.
