Easy Charted Texture Scarf

A soft, straight scarf for first chart reading: stable garter borders frame a simple textured panel worked from the attached stitch chart. No shaping, constant stitch count, and clear RS/WS rhythm.

Materials

• Yarn: Worsted weight (category 4), approx 400 yd (366 m) solid or softly heathered light-to-medium color so texture shows
• Needles: US 8 (5 mm) straight or circular; size to match gauge
• Notions: Tapestry needle; locking stitch marker (optional, to mark RS); blocking tools

Gauge

18 sts and 24 rows = 4" (10 cm) in stockinette stitch, blocked
Texture panel: about 18 sts = 4" (10 cm) over chart pattern after blocking

Swatch the chart panel if you substitute yarn. Change needle size to match gauge — width depends on it.

Finished Size

One size: approx 9" (23 cm) wide × 60" (152 cm) long, blocked
(Width = 41 sts at gauge; length adjustable by working more or fewer chart repeats.)

Pattern Notes

Where it sits in the pattern

• Work the chart only on the center 31 stitches of every row, after the setup rows.
• The written instructions below tell you when to start the chart, how many vertical repeats to work, and when to stop for the ending border.

How to read the chart (knitting, flat)

• Rows are worked back and forth.
• RS rows (usually odd numbers): read the chart right to left.
• WS rows (usually even numbers): read the chart left to right.
• Each square = one stitch; follow the key on the attached chart for blank/knit, dot/purl, or any other symbols used.
• Work row 1 of the chart on a RS row unless the attached key says otherwise.
• Repeat the marked repeat box across the 31-st panel as indicated on the chart (the panel width is fixed at 31 sts total including any edge stitches drawn on the chart).
• Color changes: this version is one color. If your attached chart is multi-color, carry or strand per the chart key and keep floats loose on WS; still maintain exactly 31 sts in the panel.

Stitch-count integration

• Border 5 sts + chart panel 31 sts + border 5 sts = 41 sts.
• Chart rows must not net increase or decrease inside the panel. If a symbol would change count, it does not belong in this scarf version — stick to texture-only symbols (k/p and similar).

Instructions

Cast-on and lower border

1. CO 41 sts using a long-tail cast-on (or any stretchy CO you like).
2. Knit 6 rows garter stitch (knit every stitch, every row).
   • These 6 rows form the lower border.
   • Next row will be RS of the main fabric.

Body (chart panel)

Row setup (RS): K5 (border), work Row 1 of the Attached Stitch Chart across center 31 sts, k5 (border). (41 sts)
Next row (WS): K5, work next chart row across center 31 sts, k5. (41 sts)

Continue in this manner:

• Always k5 at each edge for the garter borders.
• Always work the center 31 sts from the attached chart, advancing one chart row per scarf row.
• When you complete the last row of the chart repeat, return to chart Row 1 and repeat.

Work even until scarf measures about 58" (147 cm) from CO edge, or desired length minus ~2" (5 cm) for the top garter border, ending after a WS chart row so the next row is RS.
(At gauge, the charted section is roughly 52–54" before the final border; adjust to taste.)

Inline check: Borders + panel = 5 + 31 + 5 = 41 sts on every row ✓

Upper border and bind-off

1. Knit 6 rows garter stitch across all 41 sts.
2. BO knitwise on the next RS row. Cut yarn, leaving a 6" (15 cm) tail.

Finishing

1. Weave in ends with tapestry needle on the WS.
2. Block: soak in lukewarm water with mild wool wash, press out water (do not wring), pin to 9" × 60" (or your preferred length), and dry flat. Blocking evens the chart texture and lengthens the scarf slightly.
3. Optional: add short fringe — cut 8–10" strands, attach 2–3 strands per stitch along CO and BO edges; trim even.
