### A Flat Crochet Pokémon Appliqué Pattern

## PATTERN OVERVIEW

Bring everyone's favorite Mythical Pokémon to life with this sweet Mew face appliqué! Worked flat in the round, this cheerful pink face can be sewn onto bags, hats, baby blankets, sweaters, or anything else that needs a little legendary flair. The pattern is written at an intermediate level — you'll be comfortable with increases, working in continuous rounds, and basic embroidery finishing.

## YARN NOTES

Mew's signature color is a very pale, soft pink — almost a blush or baby pink. Avoid hot pink or coral. Some crocheters prefer a pale lilac-pink. Both are accurate to different Mew artwork. Suggested colors (brand examples, not required):

## PATTERN NOTES

1. The head is worked in **continuous rounds** (no joining, no turning). Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round and move it up as you go.
2. All pieces are worked **flat** — do not stuff unless noted.
3. Leave a **long tail** (at least 12 inches / 30 cm) when fastening off each piece — you'll use these tails to sew pieces together.
4. The **right side (RS)** of your work is the smooth side — this faces forward on your appliqué.

### PIECE 1: HEAD

**With MC, make a magic ring.**

### PIECE 2: EAR (Make 2)

Mew has small, rounded triangular ears that sit at the top of the head, angled slightly outward.

**With MC, ch 4.**

**Row 1 (RS):** Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 3. Turn. **(3 sts)**

**Row 2:** Ch 1, inc, sc 1, inc. Turn. **(5 sts)**

**Edging:** Do not fasten off. Working around the entire ear, sc evenly around all edges (approximately 3 sc per straight side, 1 sc in each corner), finishing at the base. Sl st to join. Fasten off, leaving a 12-inch (30 cm) tail.

### PIECE 3: INNER EAR (Make 2)

**With Color B, ch 3.**

Fasten off, leaving an 8-inch (20 cm) tail. The inner ear should be slightly smaller than the outer ear and will be sewn onto the RS of the ear before the ear is attached to the head.

### PIECE 4: SNOUT

Mew has a tiny, rounded snout — almost invisible, just a subtle oval bump in the lower half of the face.

**With MC (or Color C for a slightly lighter snout), make a magic ring.**

**Round 1:** 6 sc in MR. Pull ring closed. **(6 sts)**

**Round 2:** [Sc 1, inc] 3 times. **(9 sts)**

Sl st in next st to join. Fasten off, leaving a 10-inch (25 cm) tail. This tiny circle will be lightly padded and positioned on the lower-center of the head.

> **Optional:** Before sewing down, tuck a tiny pinch of polyester fiberfill behind the snout to give it a slight 3D lift.

## EMBELLISHMENTS

### Eyes

**Option A — Safety Eyes:** Position two 12 mm black safety eyes symmetrically on the head, centered between Rounds 4 and 5 from the top, spaced approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) apart. *Install safety eyes BEFORE sewing the head onto your project if the project has an accessible back.* If sewing directly to a flat surface, use Option B.

**Option B — Embroidered Eyes:** Using black yarn or 6-strand black embroidery floss, embroider two oval eyes after all pieces are fully assembled and sewn down. Work 4–5 straight stitches side by side to create a soft oval approximately 0.5 inch (1.3 cm) tall. Optionally add a tiny white highlight stitch in the upper corner of each eye using white embroidery floss.

### Nose

Using pink embroidery floss or a length of pink yarn, embroider a tiny upside-down triangle or small "Y" shape at the center of the snout, approximately 0.25 inch (6 mm) wide.

### Blush Marks

Using pink embroidery floss (2–3 shades darker than MC), embroider three short horizontal straight stitches in a loose cluster below and slightly outside each eye — these are Mew's characteristic cheek blush marks. Each cluster is approximately 0.4 inch (1 cm) wide. Alternatively, use a pink fabric marker or chalk pastel.

## ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS

Follow these steps in order for best results.

**Step 1 — Attach Inner Ears to Ears**
With WS of inner ear facing RS of outer ear, center the inner ear on the outer ear piece, leaving a small border of pink visible all around. Using the Color B tail and yarn needle, whipstitch the inner ear in place. Weave in ends on WS.

**Step 2 — Position Ears on Head**
Lay the head flat with RS facing up. Place the ears at the top of the head, angling them approximately 30–45 degrees outward (like a cat or bat ear position). The base of each ear should overlap the head edge by about 3–4 sts. The left ear sits at approximately the 10 o'clock position; the right ear sits at approximately the 2 o'clock position. Pin in place.

**Step 3 — Sew Ears to Head**
Using the MC tail from each ear and a yarn needle, whipstitch or mattress stitch along the base of each ear, securing it firmly to the head. Weave in ends on WS of head.

**Step 4 — Position Snout**
Center the snout on the lower half of the head, approximately between Rounds 3 and 5 from the bottom edge (Rounds 3–5 counting up from the edge, or approximately Rounds 3–5 down from center). If using fiberfill, place the tiny amount behind the snout now. Pin in place.

**Step 5 — Sew Snout**
Using the snout tail, whipstitch around the full perimeter of the snout, securing it to the head. Leave no gaps. Weave in end.

**Step 6 — Install Eyes**
If using safety eyes (Option A), install them now, following the placement guide in the Embellishments section. If embroidering (Option B), proceed to Step 7 and embroider eyes as the final step.

**Step 7 — Embroider Nose and Blush**
Using embroidery floss or yarn as described in the Embellishments section, embroider the nose onto the snout, then add the blush marks to the cheek area.

**Step 8 — Final Attachment**
Sew or glue (using fabric glue) the completed Mew face appliqué to your project. If sewing, use MC yarn and whipstitch all around the outer edge of the head, making sure to tack down any ear edges that lift. If the appliqué will be washed, sewing is strongly recommended over glue.

## FINISHING

Weave in all remaining ends securely. For a polished look, you may lightly steam block the finished appliqué (do not press) to relax the stitches and help the piece lie flat.

## TIPS & TROUBLESHOOTING

- **Appliqué is cupping (curling up):** Your tension is too tight. Block with a damp cloth or switch to a hook one size larger.
- **Appliqué is ruffling:** Your tension is too loose. Switch to a hook one size smaller.
- **Ears won't stay in the right position:** Try pinning them and taking a photo before sewing — it's easier to adjust pins than stitches!
- **The finished piece looks nothing like Mew:** The blush marks and eye shape make the biggest difference. Exaggerate the eyes (make them slightly large and round) and keep the blush marks dainty.
- **Color feels too dark:** Mew should look very pale and soft. If your pink reads as "hot pink" in photos, try a lighter yarn or a natural/undyed yarn with a blush tint.
