Simple Knitted Amigurumi Doll (Beginner)

A soft, huggable knitted lamb doll worked in the round. Sebastian has a round head, sturdy body, four little legs, floppy ears, and a tiny tail—perfect for cuddles. Stockinette stitch throughout; separate pieces stuffed firmly and seamed with mattress stitch.

Finished Size: Approximately 9–10 inches (23–25 cm) tall when standing (about 7 inches / 18 cm seated)

Materials

• Yarn: Worsted weight (category 4), approx 120–140 yd (110–128 m) main color (MC) — soft cream, ivory, or pale gray for fleece look
  Small amount of contrasting color (CC) for face/hoof accents or inner ears (optional; light brown, charcoal, or soft black)
  Sample uses ~1 skein MC
• Needles: US 5 / 3.75 mm double-pointed needles (DPNs) or 32–40 inch circular for Magic Loop (1–2 sizes smaller than yarn label for a tight fabric)
• Notions:
  • Polyester fiberfill stuffing (approx 3–4 oz / 85–115 g)
  • 9 mm or 10 mm safety eyes (pair) or black embroidery floss for eyes
  • Embroidery floss or scrap yarn for nose/mouth (black or dark brown)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch marker
  • Small scissors

Optional: Tiny bit of pink yarn or floss for inner ears/cheeks

Gauge

20 sts and 28 rounds = 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch in the round on US 5 / 3.75 mm needles.

Gauge note: Exact stitch count is less important than a firm, even fabric. Fabric must be tight enough that stuffing does not show through. Adjust needle size if needed.

Pattern Notes

• Worked in the round as seamless tubes. Use DPNs or Magic Loop.
• Stuff each piece firmly as you go (especially before closing decreases) so Sebastian holds his cuddly shape.
• Safety eyes: Insert before beginning the crown decreases on the head. If the doll is for a child under 3 years, embroider eyes instead.
• All seams use mattress stitch with matching yarn; weave ends securely to the inside.

Head

With MC, CO 6 sts. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist. PM for beginning of rnd.

Rnd 1: Kfb around. (6 increases → 6 + 6 = 12 sts ✓)
Rnd 2: Knit.
Rnd 3: *K1, kfb; rep from * around. (6 increases → 12 + 6 = 18 sts ✓)

Cut yarn, leaving a 8-inch (20 cm) tail. Thread tail through remaining 6 sts, pull tight to close, and secure. Weave end to inside. Head circumference approx 6 inches (15 cm).

Body

With MC, CO 6 sts. Join to work in the round. PM.

Stuff body firmly as you work the final inches and during decreases.

Cut yarn, leave long tail for seaming head to body later. Thread through remaining sts, pull closed, secure. Body is slightly longer and wider than head for a stable cuddle shape.

Legs (make 4)

With MC (or CC for lower “hoof” section if desired), CO 12 sts. Join to work in the round. PM.

Rnds 1–12: Knit.

Optional hoof color change: Work Rnds 1–4 in CC, then switch to MC for Rnds 5–12.

Stuff leg firmly.

Rnd 13: *K2tog; rep from * around. (6 sts ✓)
Rnd 14: *K2tog; rep from * around. (3 sts ✓)

Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull tight, secure. Leave a 10-inch (25 cm) tail for sewing to body.

(All four legs identical for beginner ease; place two as front, two as back.)

Ears (make 2)

Worked flat in rows for easy beginner shaping, then seamed lightly at base.

With MC, CO 8 sts.

Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2 (WS): Purl.
Rows 3–6: Continue in St st (knit RS, purl WS).
Row 7: K1, k2tog, k2, k2tog, k1. (6 sts ✓)
Row 8: Purl.
Row 9: K1, k2tog, k2tog, k1. (4 sts ✓)
Row 10: Purl.
Row 11: K2tog twice. (2 sts ✓)

BO remaining 2 sts. Cut yarn, leave 8-inch (20 cm) tail.

Optional: With CC or pink, embroider a few straight stitches on the lower inner half of each ear for a soft inner-ear look. Fold ear slightly lengthwise and use tail to gather the CO edge into a gentle curve so ear sits floppy.

Tail

With MC, CO 6 sts. Join to work in the round (or work as a tiny I-cord if preferred).

Rnds 1–5: Knit.
Rnd 6: *K2tog; rep from * around. (3 sts ✓)

Cut yarn, thread through sts, pull closed. Leave tail for sewing. Stuff very lightly or not at all so it stays small and cute.

Face Details

• Eyes: Safety eyes already placed, or embroider two small satin-stitch or French-knot eyes with black floss, about 6–7 sts apart.
• Nose: With dark brown or black floss/yarn, embroider a small inverted triangle or “Y” shape centered below and between the eyes (over 2–3 sts wide).
• Mouth: One or two short straight stitches under the nose for a gentle, kind smile.
• Optional cheeks: Tiny pink straight stitches or a dab of safe fabric blush on either side of muzzle area.

Keep features soft and friendly—Sebastian is a cuddle-and-kind lamb.

Assembly

1. Head to body: Using the long body tail (or matching yarn), mattress-stitch the base of the head to the top opening of the body. Match center front. Add a final bit of stuffing at the neck join if needed for a firm, cuddly neck, then close seam completely. Weave ends inside.
2. Legs: Pin four legs symmetrically at the lower body.
   • Two front legs: slightly forward on lower front third of body, about 1 inch (2.5 cm) apart.
   • Two back legs: opposite side / underside, spaced so doll sits or stands stably.
     Sew each leg securely with mattress stitch or whipstitch around the top opening, attaching through both leg and body fabric. Weave ends inside.
3. Ears: Position on upper sides of head (roughly Rnds 8–11 area), angled slightly backward and outward for a sweet lamb look. Sew CO/gathered edge firmly to head. Weave ends inside.
4. Tail: Sew to lower center back of body, just above the back legs.
5. Final check: Ensure all limbs are symmetric, stuffing is even, and every yarn end is buried securely inside the toy.

Finishing

• Weave in any remaining ends to the inside of the body/head.
• Gently shape Sebastian by rolling and squeezing so head is round, body plump, and legs even.
• If desired, tie a simple narrow scrap-yarn or ribbon bow around the neck (remove for very young children).
• Spot clean only; do not machine wash if safety eyes are used.
